Hans Malicky

Hans Malicky (born July 17, 1935 in Vienna ) is an Austrian entomologist . His main research interests are butterflies and caddis flies .

Live and act

Malicky is the son of the skilled worker Johann Malicky and his wife Maria. He grew up in Theresienfeld in Lower Austria , spent between 1967 and 1969 in Styria and has lived in Lunz am See since 1969 . In 1965 he married the botanist Gudrun Schlatte, with whom he has two sons. After finishing school in Theresienfeld and Wiener Neustadt , he attended the Federal Teaching and Research Institute for the Chemical Industry and Commerce in Vienna. He then passed the professional maturity examination for zoology and botany at the University of Vienna . In 1967 he received his doctorate in philosophy there . In 1977 he qualified as a university lecturer for zoology at the University of Vienna. Since 1995 he has held the title of Associate University Professor . Malicky published over 350 scientific papers, initially publications on butterflies and since 1969 on the European caddis-fly taxa (Trichoptera). From 1986 he also studied the caddis fly fauna in Southeast Asia. In 1972, together with Ernst Reichl, he co-founded the ZOODAT database (now ZOBODAT ) in Saarbrücken, which today contains around 10,000 lepidoptera and 65,000 trichoptera data from Austria. Hans Malicky wrote several books, including an identification atlas on the European caddis fly fauna. He described insect taxa in 2073 and is honored in 104 animal and plant taxa in the epithet .

Awards

In March 2009 Malicky received the Fabricius Medal from the German Society for General and Applied Entomology in Göttingen . Since October 2009 he has been an honorary member of the Austrian Society for Entomofaunistics.
