Ettore Messina (born September 30, 1959 in Catania , Sicily ) is an Italian basketball coach. With four victories so far (with a total of nine finals) in the highest European club competition ( FIBA Europaliga or ULEB Euroleague ) and numerous national titles, he is one of the most successful basketball coaches on the continent. In 1998 Messina was named the best coach in Europe, in 2006 and 2008 the best coach of the Euroleague (officially Alexander Gomelsky Coach of the Year ). As one of 10 coaches, he was voted one of the 50 greatest personalities in the history of the highest European club competition in 2008. From 2014 to 2019 he worked in the NBA as an assistant coach at the San Antonio Spurs.

Career

After Messina had worked as a youth or assistant coach for Reyer Venezia , Superga Mestre, APU Udine and finally Virtus Bologna from 1976, he was promoted to head coach of the professional department of Virtus Bologna in 1989. He stayed there until 1993, during which time he won the Italian Cup , the European Cup Winners' Cup (both 1990) and finally the Italian championship . Until 1997 he was responsible for the Italian national team, with which he took part in three European championships and in 1997 reached the final.

Messina then returned to Virtus Bologna and won the following season in both the national championship cup and the Italian championship. In the following year Virtus won the Italian Cup and reached the final of the National Champion Cup. In 2001 he achieved the triple with Bologna , when Virtus won the newly founded Euroleague as well as the cup and championship in Italy. After the cup victory could be repeated in 2002 and Bologna failed in the Euroleague only in the final, Messina moved to Benetton Treviso . He narrowly missed another triple triumph in Treviso: In addition to the double win from the cup and championship, he made it to the finals in the Euroleague. After two more seasons with as many cup wins, Messina moved to CSKA Moscow . Here Messina won the triple (Euroleague, championship and cup) straight away and also reached the final of the Euroleague in 2007, with CSKA in Russia successfully defending the title in both the cup and the championship. In 2008 they won the Euroleague title again, while ZSKA lost the final the following year. Again Messina won the national championship with Moscow. In the summer of 2009 he moved to the Spanish club Real Madrid . After a season and a half without winning the title, Messina submitted his resignation in March 2011.

June 2011 it was announced that the Los Angeles Lakers had offered Messina a contract as an assistant coach. Messina was to work with Mike Brown to lead the 2010 champions to new titles. After just a year, however, Messina left the Lakers and returned to Europe as head coach of CSKA Moscow . With Moscow he won the VTB United League and Russian Cup double twice , but failed in the Euroleague semi-finals in 2013 and 2014 against the eventual winner of the competition. Then Messina moved again to the NBA and was the reigning title holder San Antonio Spurs assistant coach under Gregg Popovich . In the summer of 2019, he finished his work at Spurs and signed as head coach with the Italian record champions Olimpia Milano .
