Tyronn Jamar Lue (born May 3, 1977 in Mexico , Missouri ) is a former American basketball player and then coach in the NBA . Lue played in the point guard position between 1998 and 2009 . As a coach, he won the championship with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2016 .
Player career
Lue began his NBA career in 1998 after he was selected in the 1998 NBA Draft by the Denver Nuggets in 23rd place and delivered directly to the Los Angeles Lakers . With the Lakers he won the NBA championship as a reservist in 2000 and 2001. He played a key role in the 2001 NBA Finals, where he defended Allen Iverson due to his speed . He left the Lakers in 2001 and moved to the Washington Wizards , where he took on a bigger role and improved. In the 2003-04 season he was the starting point guard of the Orlando Magic . However, he was transferred to the Houston Rockets in the summer of 2004 as part of a transfer for Tracy McGrady . For Jon Barry he was given to Atlanta in the middle of the season . With the weak Hawks he took on the role of point guard and, despite the lack of team success, played his best time and scored 11.0 points and 3.6 assists per game in four years. He spent the last two NBA years as a reservist with the Dallas Mavericks , Milwaukee Bucks and Orlando Magic.
Coaching career
Immediately after finishing his playing career, Lue first became director of player development at the Boston Celtics . After four years, he moved to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2013 , where he became an assistant coach under Doc Rivers . In 2014 he moved to the Cleveland Cavaliers , where he became the NBA's highest-paid assistant coach under David Blatt . Blatt was dismissed as coach by the Cavaliers on January 22, 2016, with Lue taking over his post. He won the NBA championship with the Cavaliers a few months after taking office. After Steve Kerr from the previous year, he was only the second rookie coach to win the championship in his first year. In 2017 and 2018 Lue reached the final again with the Cavaliers, but was defeated by the Golden State Warriors in both years . With the departure of superstar LeBron James and the subsequent false start to the 2018-19 season, Lue was dismissed by the Cavaliers after six opening defeats. He has been an assistant coach at the Los Angeles Clippers since the 2019-20 season.
