The Waldmöpse are several "life-size" sculptures that have been set up in various places in the city of Brandenburg an der Havel since 2015 . The wood pug is a fictional character by the humorist Loriot , who was born in Brandenburg and is also an honorary citizen of this city. The sculptures were created by the artist Clara Walter .

history

Animal lesson - the wild wood pug

The figure of the wood pug comes from the sketch Animal Hour - The wild wood pug by the humorist Loriot, which he presented in 1972 in the nineteenth episode of the television series Cartoon . In the sketch is about the fabled breed of pug from a large elchartigen and horned animal to racial and lapdog . In German forests only the “shy wood pug”, which is described as basically similar to a pug, but with a “short but powerful horn”, survived. It causes severe damage to flora and fauna , hibernates by the hundreds of thousands in South Africa and in spring has its mating areas at the mouth of the Weser . The comment of the moderator of the animal hour program Horst Stern , played by Loriot, changes from sharp criticism of blind breeding ambition at the expense of a formerly noble animal, which as the "lord of the forest" had its "liberal dignity", to a contradicting, equally sharp criticism in the inaction of the federal forest administration in view of the expensive forest damage, where romantic love for animals is out of place. In the film, a moose embodies the wild forest pug in its original form and a pug with small antlers represents the shy forest pug. The gradual change in body structure and the increasing stunting of the antlers are illustrated with several drawings by Loriot.

Forest pug center and circular route

In preparation for the 2015 Federal Horticultural Show , which was held in Brandenburg an der Havel, among others, consideration was given to creating a so-called “Wood Pug Center” in Loriot's birthplace. It should be a reminiscence of the famous artist and a memorial to him. The young artist Clara Walter won the tender for the project. It was her first major order after graduation and was endowed with 50,000 euros, financed by the Brandenburg Cultural Association.

On April 17, 2015, the forest pug center was opened by the Federal Foreign Minister and chairman of the cultural association Frank-Walter Steinmeier , and the bronze figures were officially handed over. The figures were set up in a standing, lying, leaning and sitting posture in various places in the inner city of Brandenburg near the BUGA sites, for example around the Johanniskirche , in Humboldthain and on the Packhofufer.

Originally the art project was supposed to consist of only eight sculptures. Since the first figures were erected, they quickly became very popular with the population, so orders for other sculptures , some of which were financed by private donors, were placed. The costs from the idea to the completion for a single cast forest pug are given at around 4,500 euros. In January 2016 a total of 13 forest mop sculptures were set up. According to plans, it should be 25 to 30 in the course of a circular route .

criticism

The animal welfare organization PETA criticized the work of art in 2015. Deutschlandradio Kultur described PETA's position in this context: “Pugs are the epitome of torture breeding . In addition to a whole range of hereditary diseases, breathing problems in particular would cause them. Life as a pug is possible, say the animal rights activists, following Loriot, but joyless. "
