Maccabi Haifa BC is an Israeli basketball club based in Haifa . The club is part of the Maccabi Haifa sports club , whose football club is the flagship.

history

The association was founded in 1953, making it one of the oldest in Israel, which was founded in 1948. Maccabi is a founding member of the first division, the Ligat ha'Al. The club struggled in the league from the start, against the competition from Holon , city rivals Hapoel and the two teams from Tel Aviv . The team had no chance in the fight for the title.

In 1971 and 1985 Maccabi lost the Israeli cup final against series champion Maccabi Tel Aviv .

The sporting level at Maccabi steadily decreased in the 1990s. In 1993 the club was relegated, two years later they had arrived in the third division. In 1999 they celebrated their return to the Ligat ha'Al. After initially good performances and various play-off participations, relegations and re-ascents followed. Maccabi rose for the last time in 2008 and has played in the top division ever since.

In 2009 and 2013 the club lost two final games in the cup competition. Instead, they won the 2013 championship final against Maccabi Tel Aviv .
