Sylven Joshua Landesberg ( Hebrew סילבן לנדסברג; Born April 10, 1990 in Brooklyn , New York City ) is an American - Israeli - Austrian basketball player . Landesberg broke off his studies in his home country and turned professional in Israel , where, after two years with Maccabi Haifa, he has been playing for the record champions Maccabi Tel Aviv since 2012. With this team he won a triple crown in 2014 from a national double and the highest-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 . On November 29, 2018, Landesberg played his first game in the Austrian national team.

origin

Landesberg is the son of a Jewish father and mother from Trinidad and Tobago . His paternal grandfather comes from Austria.

Career

High school

At the end of his school years in Flushing in 2008 , Landsberg was named the best basketball player in his age group in New York State and invited to the renowned McDonald's All-American Game of the best school basketball players in the country.

college

Then Landesberg began studying at the University of Virginia , where he played for the college team Cavaliers from 2008 in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) of the NCAA Division I. Even as a " freshman ", Landesberg was the top scorer and second best rebounder of his team and was named ACC Rookie of the Year . In his second season as a " sophomore ", Landesberg did not keep his academic obligations and was then suspended by the new coach at the end of the season.

NBA draft

Landesberg then finished his studies and signed up for the " Entry Draft " of the highest endowed professional league NBA , which made a return to the NCAA impossible according to the regulations. In the 2010 NBA draft , however, Landesberg was not selected.

Israel, Europe and Turkey

Landesberg then went to Israel , where he was not subject to any restrictions as a foreigner because of his Jewish descent. In a pre-season game against the NBA club New Jersey Nets , he was the top scorer with 24 points for his team Maccabi from Haifa , which successfully prevailed in qualifying for the EuroChallenge 2010/11 at the start of the season and in a European club competition for the first time in over ten years participated. There they beat the Skyliners Frankfurt twice and qualified for the top 16 round of the round of 16. In the national championship they were far less successful and only reached the penultimate place in the table after two coach changes, so that they could only ensure relegation in the relegation round. The following season 2011/12 ended disastrously after only five season wins in the last place in the table, whereby Haifa was able to keep the class because of the increase in the league. Landesberg individually rose to become the second best scorer in the Ligat ha'Al and left the team at the end of the season.

For the 2012/13 season, Landesberg was signed by the national double winner and record champion Maccabi from Tel Aviv . Maccabi Tel Aviv successfully defended the national cup competition and defeated Landesberg's former team from Haifa with eight points difference in the final. In the quarter-final play-offs of the top-ranking European club competition ULEB Euroleague 2012/13 , Tel Aviv lost in three games against Real Madrid and finally, surprisingly, the championship final against Haifa, who took revenge for the cup final defeat and won a championship for the first time as bottom of the table last year . In the following season Tel Aviv defended the title in the national cup competition and was able to move into the Final Four of the ULEB Euroleague 2013/14 . There they surprisingly beat PBK CSKA Moscow with one point difference and finally Real Madrid in the final after extra time. However, Landesberg did not get any time in the Final Four, as coach David Blatt had sufficiently good scorers in the backcourt positions and preferred defensively stronger players on small forward . At the end of the season, in the final of the national championship against defending champion Haifa, the title was won back and won a Triple Crown . He played for Maccabi Tel Aviv until 2017.

With the 2017/18 season, Landesberg moved to Spain to the ACB at Estudiantes Madrid . On April 1, 2018, Landesberg achieved his career record with 48 points (8 of 11 three-point throws) in the game he won 100: 91 against FC Barcelona . On May 24, 2018, Landesberg was nominated for the All-Liga ACB First Team and took 5th place in the MVP of the ACB League for the season . In 30 ACB league games, Landesberg averaged 20.1 points, 4 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game. He was the ACB's second best scorer this season with 19.7 points per game.

Since June 22, 2018, Landesberg has been under contract with Türk Telekom Ankara for the 2018/19 season in Turkey .

Austrian national team

Landesberg made his debut in the Austrian national team on November 29, 2018 in the away game against Great Britain as part of the pre-qualification for the European Championship 2021 (Group D). He scored 40 points before the break and set an ÖBV record with 49 points. Austria won with 96:82 (60:42). Furthermore, Landesberg achieved ten rebounds, five assists and two steals with four ball losses in 34:37 minutes of play. The attribution of points for Landesberg was subsequently corrected to 47 points.
