Thomas Domenig (born March 13, 1933 in Chur ) is an architect from the Swiss canton of Graubünden . Its residential complexes with high-rise buildings shape the skyline of the city of Chur today.

Life

After his school days in Chur, Domenig studied architecture at the ETH Zurich . For a year he worked as an assistant at William Dunkel , then in 1958 he joined the architectural office of his father Thomas Domenig-Clavuot, which was founded in 1933 and had already built numerous striking buildings in Chur. He realized the Solaria Park as the first district plan for Churs, and further district plans followed.

The first large coherent work was created at the end of the 1960s, the Lacunaquartier with the five striking high-rise buildings that caused a sensation across Switzerland. In addition, Domenig built other residential buildings, school and commercial buildings and commercial buildings. In 1974 Domenig took over his father's office and specialized in neighborhood planning. The new Chur West quarter is currently being built in the west of the city (2014) , and the Domenig office played a key role in its design. Today his sons Jon and Thomas Domenig run the company. The property portfolio includes over 90 residential and commercial buildings. These include the "City West" shopping center, which costs 140 million euros, with the two high-rise buildings and a hotel.

engagement

Domenig, who is seen as a tough but fair business partner and for whom the authorities often acted too sluggishly and bureaucratically, was repeatedly involved in charitable projects. As president and patron, he supported the ice hockey club EHC Chur for years , saved the Chur cable car Brambrüesch from bankruptcy and rebuilt it. In 1981 he built the city's indoor stadium on a private basis. Thanks to his commitment, an animal and leisure park was built on the site of the old powder mill.

Domenig spends a good half of the year with his wife Marianne in his second home, his own wildlife park in Namibia , where he realized a childhood dream in 1994 with the acquisition of a piece of land and the establishment of a zoo near Omaruru . The park of the Omaruru Game Lodge is located north of Windhoek and encompasses an enclosed area of 35 square kilometers. A lodge accommodates guests who can watch the numerous wild animals that Domenig has settled there over the years.
