Omaruru is known as Namibia's artist city .

The name Omaruru derives from Otjiherero omaere omaruro for "bitter curd" and refers to a bush ( gray stink bush ) that can be found in the Omaruru river bed.

history

Omaruru can be traced back to the Rhenish Mission , which erected some buildings here in 1872. The missionary Gottlieb Viehe wrote the first Herero translation of the Bible here and converted many Herero in the region to Christianity. In 1894, a military station of the German Schutztruppe for the colony of German South West Africa was set up in Omaruru , which Lieutenant Richard D. Volkmann headed as district chief until 1898.

At the beginning of 1904, the settlement became the scene of a Herero uprising against the German soldiers stationed here, which was crushed after only a week. The armored soldiers received support from a company led by Captain Victor Franke . This broke through the siege ring of the Herero and liberated the barracks. Nothing is known in detail about the number of victims on both sides. The Franketurm in Omaruru commemorates this operation . This and the surrounding battlefields are a national monument of Namibia .

Today Omaruru is a rather sleepy, but very cosmopolitan town, in which there are a number of hotels , a campsite and a few shops, above all a number of art institutions and associations and, last but not least, a German school. Outside Omaruru is the approximately 3.5 hectare vineyard Crystal winery , one of only a few wine regions in Namibia , as well as the Benedictine Waldfrieden . The surrounding settlements Okombahe (3400 inhabitants), Otjimbojo, Otjohorongo and Omahoro also belong to Omaruru. The landscape in the area is relatively fertile.

Sorry from the von Trotha family

In October 2007, the descendants of General Lothar von Trotha and members of the von Trotha family traveled to Omaruru at the invitation of the traditional Herero leaders to publicly apologize for von Trotha's role in the Herero and Nama uprising and to ask for forgiveness.

Arts and Culture

In recent years, artists and art workers have settled down, giving the place a more modern flair. Is known Tikoloshe Africa at the tunnel entrance, elaborate wood carvings offering. A group of Kavango -Schnitzern is inspired by the natural growth of the material and then made quirky carvings. It is carved from weathered, dry roots and tree trunks, some of which are thousands of years old. The wood is mostly collected in the semi-desert and in the northern areas of Namibia.
