Demetrius Darnell Alexander (born November 3, 1975 in St. Louis , Missouri ) is a professional American basketball player . He celebrated his greatest successes with the Latvian club Barons / LMT from Riga , with which he not only won the Latvian championship in 2008, but also the European club competition FIBA EuroCup . In the Latvian championship he was named Most Valuable Player (MVP) as before in the Japanese championship in 2000, and in 2008 he was elected to the All-Star team of the EuroCup competition. He has been playing for the Israeli first division club Bnei HaSharon since 2012 .

Career

college

As a successful basketball player at his high school in his native US state Missouri, Alexander switched to the Junior College Hutchinson Community College in Hutchinson (Kansas) in 1994 . The Blue Dragons college basketball team was the reigning national junior college champion in the NJCAA at the time. This success could not be repeated in the following two years. In 1996, Alexander continued his studies at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa and played for the Crimson Tide team, among others, together with MC Mazique in the NCAA's Southeastern Conference . The Conference was at that time mainly by the Wildcats of the University of Kentucky dominated the 1996 champion, in 1997 and 1998 vice-champion of the NCAA Division I Basketball Championship -Turniers were. Alexander was also unable to celebrate any particular success with the Crimson Tide.

After Alexander was also not included in the NBA Draft , he continued his professional career in the Minor League CBA . For the 2000/01 season, Alexander went to Israel , which is part of the continental association FIBA Europe . After a season with the Galilean "workers' association" Hapoel Galil Elyon , he moved to the namesake and runner-up in the capital Jerusalem . While they missed the championship final, the club moved back to the Israeli Cup final with Alexander in 2002, where they again lost to series winner Maccabi Tel Aviv . For the season 2002/03 he got a contract in the Italian Lega Basket Serie A with Snaidero from Udine . Snaidero reached the second round in the European club competition ULEB Cup 2002/03 , where they were eliminated against national competitor Metis Varese . In the national championship Snaidero finished the season penultimate and could only avoid relegation by excluding Virtus Bologna . During the 2003 summer break, Alexander finally had a contract with the NBA with the Utah Jazz . In the nomination of the final season squad, however, he was not taken into account and was dismissed before the start of the season at the end of October. In December 2003 he had a short contract in Haifa, Israel .

In April 2004 Alexander signed a contract for the first time in the Spanish league ACB . At the basketball club from Fuenlabrada , however, he only had a short-term contract and could no longer prevent the club's relegation. Then he was initially active in the summer league Baloncesto Superior Nacional in Puerto Rico and then had appearances in the Minnesota Summer League for the NBA club Philadelphia 76ers . For the 2004/05 season he got a long-term engagement with the Spanish first division club Fórum Filatélico from Valladolid . At Fórum he was named Player of the Week twice this season and Player of the Month for December 2004 in the Spanish first division. However, the team could not qualify for the play-offs for the Spanish championship. In the 2005/06 season he then played in South Korea , before he signed in the spring of 2006, first in the LNB Pro A in the main round first Élan Béarnais from Pau in southern France. In the championship play-offs, however, they were eliminated in the semifinals against the later title holder Le Mans Sarthe Basket . In the 2006/07 season he was again active in the Spanish ACB league, where he played for Caja San Fernando from Seville . Again, Alexander was awarded twice as player of the day (previously: week), but his team was again only enough to place in midfield.

For the 2007/08 season he went to Latvia to join the Barons / LMT club in Riga . With this club he won the national championship for the first time in 2008. In addition, they surprisingly reached the Final Four tournament in the European club competition FIBA EuroCup , after Alexander scored five double doubles in eleven European Cup games. At the final tournament in Cyprus they beat the Baltic - Estonian competitor Tartu Rock in the semifinals and the Belgian representative Dexia from Mons with one point in the final , with Alexander having a decisive role in the success in the final minutes. In the following season 2008/09 he was unable to build on these successes with the Barons. In the higher-ranking European club competition ULEB Cup 2008/09 , for which one was qualified after the success, one retired early in the first group phase. In February 2009, Alexander left the Barons and joined the basketball club to the Ukrainian Donetsk .

With BK Donetsk, Alexander was Ukrainian runner-up in 2009 and an MVP in the All-Star Game of the Ukrainian Super League. For the 2009/10 season he moved to the Greek A1 Ethniki to Enosi Kalathosfairisis from Kavala . Here he played only a few games and in January 2010 he moved to the Ukrainian champions Azovmash from Mariupol . With Azovmash he was able to successfully defend the championship in Ukraine twice in 2010 and 2011 and was also named MVP on the first day of the Eastern European VTB United League 2010/11 and as Player of the Week on the third day of the Eurocup 2010/11 . With Azovmash he reached the Final Four of the VTB League, where they finally took fourth place. Since the beginning of 2012 he has been playing in Israel again for the first division club Bnei HaSharon from Herzliya .
