The Basketball Löwen Braunschweig are a basketball team from Braunschweig . Dennis Schröder is a partner in Basketball Löwen Braunschweig GmbH .

history

SG Braunschweig was active in the 1st basketball league until the 1999/2000 season , then passed the first division license on to Metabox Braunschweig .

After a few months, however, the name sponsor Metabox withdrew due to economic difficulties. The Stadtsportbund rescued the team, which operated from January 2001 until the end of the 2001/02 season under the name StadtSport Braunschweig . In the 2002/03 season was played under the name TXU Braunschweig . Since the 2003/04 season the name has been BS Energy Braunschweig . At the end of the 2005/06 season , the team was on a relegation zone. By adding two more places to the BBL, the association had the opportunity to buy a wildcard in an application process for an additional 100,000 euros. Due to the seasonal performance, there was also no inflow of funds, so that the club could only afford this with the support of sponsors (BS Energy, Public Insurance Braunschweig, Volkswagen Sport Promotion). BS Energy waived its namesake rights, but, like the other two big sponsors, guaranteed the same amount of funding as before.

In the 2006/07 season , the Braunschweig clothing company became New York’s new name sponsor. The new team name was determined in a survey on the company's website, in which three variants were available. 78% of the approx. 4800 participants voted for the name New Yorker Phantoms Braunschweig . The disadvantage of this name, however, was that outsiders could mistakenly associate the club with New York City .

In the 2009/10 season , the team reached eighth place in the main round for the first time in seven years the play-off round. In the quarter-final series they beat the main round first Oldenburg 3-1. In the semi-finals, the Phantoms lost 3-0 against the eventual German champions and cup winners Bamberg.

In the 2010/11 season they made it into the final tournament for the BBL Cup for the first time, after they beat EWE Baskets Oldenburg in the quarterfinals with 88:76 ; they defeated Frankfurt in the semi-finals, before they had to admit defeat to the Brose Baskets Bamberg team 66:69 in the final.

In 2011/12 , the team was able to move into the semi-finals of the cup and was defeated by the Telekom Baskets Bonn . In the main round, the team reached seventh place and met Ratiopharm Ulm in the first round of the play-offs . There the Phantoms lost 3-0 in the best-of-five series and were eliminated in the quarter-finals. During the season, coach Sebastian Machowski announced that he would leave the club after the end of the season. He switched to EWE Baskets Oldenburg . His successor was the Greek Kostas Flevarakis .

In terms of sport, the 2012/13 season was more disappointing than previous seasons. The entire season the team was in a relegation battle and it was only on the penultimate matchday of the point round to secure relegation through an away win at the Walter Tigers Tübingen . The only sporting ray of hope was the development of Dennis Schröder , who was honored for his achievements as “Best German Young Player 2013” and “Most Improved Player 2013”. Shortly after the end of the season, the Phantoms announced that coach Flevarakis would no longer work for the club for the 2013/2014 season.

As the new head coach for the 2013/14 season , the Phantoms presented the Austrian Raoul Korner, who previously worked as head coach for the EiffelTowers Den Bosch in the Netherlands. With Sean McCaw, a new trainer for the youth and individual area was also presented. The season ended in 15th place.

In 2014 Oliver Braun resigned as managing director and sports director after seven years in office. For the 2014/15 season , the previous name sponsor New Yorker announced that it would not extend its commitment. The club was then renamed Basketball Löwen Braunschweig . The team colors have been changed to blue and yellow. This is to express the bond with the Braunschweig region.

In May 2015 the Löwen entered into a cooperation with the Dukes of Wolfenbüttel and SG FT / MTV Braunschweig. The collaboration was initially agreed for a period of ten years. Among other things, part of the agreement was that Braunschweig talents could collect game practice with the help of “double licenses” in the men's team of the dukes and thus be introduced to higher tasks.

At the end of the 2015/2016 season , head coach Raoul Korner left the Basketball Lions and switched to Medi bayreuth within the league . He was succeeded by the former national coach Frank Menz .

The squad composition in the run-up to the 2016/2017 season was difficult due to the tight budget, so the expectations were not very high. In fact, the season was not very successful with six wins, ultimately the class was preserved because it was clear relatively early in the season that Phoenix Hagen would lose the license due to bankruptcy and thus relegate. In addition, the newly promoted Rasta Vechta , who managed only two wins in the season, could be kept at a distance.

In February 2018, Dennis Schröder, who was born in Braunschweig and is now employed in the NBA, announced his plan to become a partner in the team in a conversation with Telekom Sport and named it as his goal to make the Löwen one of the five best clubs in Germany. At the beginning of March 2018 it was officially announced that Schröder would join the Löwen operating company as a partner starting with the 2018/19 season and take over the shares in Staake Investment & Consulting GmbH & Co. KG. Schröder took over the shares in the 2018/19 season and has been the majority owner of Basketball Löwen Braunschweig since then. The team moved into the championship round as eighth in the 2018/19 game year and lost to FC Bayern Munich in the quarter-finals with 0-3 victories.

At the beginning of June 2019, a new head coach, the Austro-American Peter Strobl, was hired, who was solely responsible for the first time in Braunschweig and had previously worked as an assistant trainer in Ulm. His predecessor Frank Menz, who led the team back into the Bundesliga championship round for the first time since 2011/12, had already announced in December 2018 that he would be leaving Braunschweig after a three-year term for personal reasons. The actually long-term collaboration with the Dukes of Wolfenbüttel for the purpose of promoting young players was ended in summer 2019 after Wolfenbüttel was relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga ProB.

In November 2019, the cooperation between the Basketball Löwen and SG Braunschweig came to an end due to different opinions about the youth work. The basketball lions withdrew their coaches, who were also active in the SG teams. The 2019/20 game year ended prematurely for the Braunschweiger at the end of March 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic . For financial reasons, the team decided not to participate in the season-end tournament, which was scheduled to determine the German champions after the interruption. In May 2020 it was announced that Dennis Schröder would act as the sole shareholder of Basketball Löwen Braunschweig GmbH from July 1, 2020, until then the Braunschweiger Versorgungs-AG & Co. KG, the Braunschweiger Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH and the Stadtsportbund Braunschweig eV were co-shareholders. Those involved hoped that this step would guarantee a “uniform strategic orientation for the basketball lions” and, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, preserve the Braunschweig basketball location.

In July 2020 Oliver Braun returned as managing director and sports director, replacing Sebastian Schmidt , who had worked for the Braunschweig company since October 2017. Shortly after Braun took office, the resumption of cooperation in the junior division with SG Braunschweig was announced under the title “What was good should be good again”. The SG Junior Löwen gGmbH was founded as the operator of the youth development, the basketball academy of Dennis Schröder, a sponsorship group under the patronage of Daniel Theis and the Oskar Kämmer Schule gGmbH took part as shareholders. However, the Basketball Lions retained responsibility for the junior teams in the JBBL and NBBL in sporting and economic terms. The long-standing Braunschweig junior manager Liviu Călin was given the sporting management of SG Junior Löwen gGmbH . In August 2020 the Basketball Lions received new club colors and a redesigned coat of arms at the behest of their partner Dennis Schröder. Schröder justified the choice of colors with the words: "Black and gold are my colors".
