Liviu Călin (born September 18, 1953 ) is a Romanian basketball coach who also has German citizenship. He is the assistant coach of the German Bundesliga club Basketball Löwen Braunschweig and the discoverer of the NBA player Dennis Schröder .

career

Călin studied at the "Institutul de Educaţie Fizică şi Sport" (German: Institute for Physical Education and Sport ) in Bucharest and graduated there in 1978. He then worked for the Bucharest club “Clubul Sportiv Școlar 4” as a youth coach. Between 1983 and 1991 Călin worked for the Romanian Basketball Federation and was part of the coaching staff of the U18, U20 and senior national teams. In 1989 he became the head coach of the Romanian national team.

In 1991 he went to Germany and became head of the Braunschweig basketball performance center (LBB) and was responsible for SG Braunschweig's youth work . He was also head coach of the 2nd men's team of SG Braunschweig for many years. In 2000, the SG's professional team was spun off, and the former 2nd team, now operating as the first SG team, rose to the 2nd Bundesliga in 2002 under Călin's leadership. There she played under his leadership until 2007, then from 2007 to 2015 in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB and served the Braunschweig first division team, who competed under different names, as a youth development team and cooperation partner. Călin's work was considered an important support for the Braunschweig professional team, as he repeatedly trained players for the first division squad. Training talent has been called his life's work. Călin, who was described by companions as a “difficult person” and “not an easy guy”, relied on hard training work and trust by also taking care of young players who were considered difficult. In 2015, the ProB license was given to the Artland Dragons from Quakenbrück , which reduced Călin's sphere of activity in the Braunschweig junior division.

In addition, from 1995 Călin was also active in Braunschweig's first division team as an assistant coach and retained this position even after the ProB team withdrew. In October 2000, after the resignation of John van Crombruggen, he stepped in as an interim coach of the Braunschweig Bundesliga team. During the 2002/03 season he was mainly responsible for a Bundesliga match in Braunschweig, as head coach Ken Scalabroni was absent from illness. According to Călin, he did not have the goal of taking over the Bundesliga coaching position. In addition to his work in Braunschweig, Călin worked as a talent scout for the German Basketball Association , as a regional coach for the Lower Saxony Basketball Association and in 2006 he was the head coach of the Romanian national team

After concentrating on his tasks as assistant and individual coach of the Braunschweig Bundesliga team in previous years, he also took over the management of the youth division again from summer 2018 as part of the cooperation between Basketball Löwen Braunschweig and SG FT / MTV Braunschweig.

Călin supported players like Dennis Schröder , Daniel Theis , Dirk Mädrich , Robin Smeulders , Howard Sant-Roos , Jan Lipke , Leo Niebuhr and Nils Mittmann in Braunschweig . The Romanian discovered the future NBA player Schröder in the Braunschweig Prinz-Albrecht-Park. After he had played in Wolfenbüttel in the meantime, Călin brought him to Braunschweig at the age of eleven. He became a kind of father figure for Schröder and gave him a chance when he was going through difficult times in his youth. He and his family owed Călin almost everything, Schröder described the great influence of the coach on his development. The often drawn comparison that the relationship between him and Schröder was just as close as that between Dirk Nowitzki and his mentor Holger Geschwindner , was rejected by Călin.

In May 2019, Călin resigned from his position as Lower Saxony state trainer to devote himself to other activities, including his advisory work at the basketball academy of his protégé Dennis Schröder. On September 15, 2019, Călin's contract as assistant coach was terminated by the Basketball Löwen Braunschweig. He then went to court. An out-of-court settlement was found, and in December 2019 the basketball lion operating company withdrew the termination. Călin worked again as an assistant coach of the Bundesliga team and headed the Löwen youth division as sports director, again in cooperation with SG Braunschweig from summer 2020.
