Howard Powell Sant-Roos Olano (born February 13, 1991 , Havana , Cuba ) is a Cuban basketball player .

Life

Sant-Roos played baseball as a teenager and came into contact with basketball at school. When his mother married an Italian, Sant-Roos moved the family to Monza, Italy in 2007 . He played in Italy in the junior division and in the lower divisions in the men's division. In the summer of 2011 he was signed by the German Bundesliga club New York Phantoms Braunschweig . Sant-Roos was mostly used for Braunschweig's training team in the 2nd Bundesliga ProB , and in the 2012/13 season he was voted into the ProB team of the year and among the top five defenders in the league by the specialist portal eurobasket.com . During his time in Germany, the Cuban only played in Braunschweig's Bundesliga team in the 2012/13 season, when he played five games (3.0 points, 1.8 rebounds per encounter).

After leaving Braunschweig, Sant-Roos worked for the Italian second division UCC Casalpusterlengo for two years. There he matured at the side of the experienced American Alvin Young, improved his technique in particular and was a top performer on his team.

For the 2015/16 game year, the Cuban moved to the Czech first division club ČEZ Basketball Nymburk and also competed with the team in European club competitions ( FIBA Europe Cup , Champions League ) over the next two years . With Nymburk, Sant-Roos became two Czech champions. His achievements there aroused the interest of the Turkish first division club Darüşşafaka SK Istanbul , who signed the Cuban winger in 2017. Sant-Roos played 27 major league games for Darüşşafaka during the 2017/18 season and averaged 7.4 points per encounter. In the Eurocup he got 8.8 points per encounter in 21 appearances, won the competition with the Turkish team supervised by coach David Blatt and was named best defender of the Eurocup season 2017/18 by eurobasket.com . Sant-Roos was the first Cuban to win the Eurocup title. During the summer break of 2018 he moved to AEK Athens in Greece . He also competed in the Champions League with the Greek capital team.

In January 2020, the Cuban, who is particularly known for his strengths as a defender, was signed by the Russian top team CSKA Moscow . He received a contract that ran until the end of the 2022/23 season, in which a clause was inserted that allowed the termination of the cooperation at the end of the 2019/20 season. After his contract termination in July 2020, Sant-Roos moved to Panathinaikos Athens .
