Lucas Clayton Sikma , called "Luke" , (born July 30, 1989 in Bellevue , Washington ) is an American basketball player . After studying in his home country, his professional career took off slowly at the highest level. So in 2011 he went to Spain to start , where he played for two different clubs in the second-rate LEB Oro for two years . Here he was able to recommend himself for the top division league ACB , where after another two years for Iberostar Tenerife he finally moved to Valencia BC, with which he won their first national championship and the runner-up in the EuroCup 2016/17 in the second year . Sikma then moved to Alba Berlin in the German Basketball Bundesliga (BBL), where he was invited to the BBL All-Star Game and narrowly missed winning the title in the 2018 easycredit BBL Cup final.
Career
Sikma's father Jack was one of the best center players in the highest endowed professional league NBA in the late 1970s and 1980s and was a protagonist of the Seattle SuperSonics championship in the NBA 1978/79 as well as an individual seven-time All-Star . His father's legacy initially seemed to be a burden for Luke Sikma, who made it into the school team in high school in his hometown and only made it into the school team in later years and after another growth spurt of more than six inches . In his school he played with a son of another NBA great from Seattle and was part of Alex Schrempf, a son of the first German NBA all-star Detlef Schrempf . Despite his initial difficulties in high school, Sikma achieved a sports scholarship at the University of Portland after graduation , where he played for four years for the college team Pilots in the West Coast Conference (WCC) of the NCAA from 2007 to 2011 . Here he was a productive member of the rotation of the players and was part of the starting five practically from the beginning of his first season as a “freshman” . In the pilots, where he played with the later Bundesliga player Robin Smeulders , among others , Sikma was able to distinguish himself as a rebounder , so that at the end of his college season after four years he was the best player in this category in the internal with almost 1,000 rebounds History of the pilots was. In addition, Sikma scored more than 1,000 points in 127 games and was appointed to the “All-WCC First Team” of the top ten players in his conference in his senior year 2011 after a double-double in points and rebounds per game. His team successes with the pilots, who won a WCC championship for the first time and last time in 1996, remained manageable for Sikma. In 2010 the pilots made it to the semifinals of the WCC tournament, where they were defeated by the Gaels of Saint Mary's College of California , and in three appearances in the rather insignificant CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament (CIT) they were eliminated three times in a row from 2009 to 2011 first round off.
Unlike his father, who came from a small college in Division III of the NCAA and was selected in eighth position in the 1977 NBA draft , Luke Sikma was not included in the 2011 NBA draft from clubs in the highest-endowed professional league, the NBA. Instead, Sikma had to start his professional career in Europe, where in Spain he only got a contract in the Canary Islands with UB La Palma in the second highest division LEB Oro, but only the third most important club after first division CB Gran Canaria and the then league competitor CB 1939 Canarias of the Canaries. While the CB in 1939 after first place in the LEB Oro 2011/12 made it to the top division ACB league, the UB La Palma had to end up in eighth place and the elimination in the first play-off round for the remaining promotion place discontinue professional gaming operations for financial reasons. After his participation in the NBA Summer League 2012 for the Minnesota Timberwolves, Sikma moved to the league competitor Autocid Ford Atapuerca , who play in Burgos , for the following season . In the jersey of Burgos, Sikma twice achieved the highest effectiveness rating of all LEB Oro players in the 2012/13 season and was named " MVP de la journada" ( German : Player of the Matchday). After Ford Burgos had lost the final game for the LEB Copa Príncipe de Asturias league cup last year , this game of the two best first round teams against River Andorra in early February 2013 with 73-67 was won. After all, at the end of the season, thanks to the better direct comparison against this team, it was also enough for first place in the table and direct athletic qualification for the top division. As a result of the increased economic requirements of the ACB League, Ford Burgos did not get a license for the top division and the home club CB Atapuerca gave the professional team to the CB Tizona, who continued to play under the same sponsor name in Burgos.
Luke Sikma, on the other hand, returned to the Canary Islands after the second division championship in 2013 and switched to last year's promoted CB 1939, who now played in the ACB league under the sponsor name Iberostar Tenerife . After Iberostar in its first season in the ACB with a balanced record, only two wins behind the established regional rival CB Gran Canarias, in tenth place narrowly missed the play-offs for the Spanish championship, it was enough with Sikma in the 2013 / 14 with 14 wins in 34 games still to eleventh place. After his teammates in the frontcourt Blagota Sekulic , who had already played among others for the German first division club Alba Berlin, after two awards early in the season as "Jugador del mes" ( German : in February 2014 Player of the Month) Turkish giants Fenerbahçe Ülker was changed , at the end of the season, based on the effectiveness rating, Sikma was not only named player of the 29th matchday, but also named “Jugador del mes” in May. After Sekulić returned to Iberostar from his brief engagement for the following season and was named Player of the Month in October again, they improved to 16 wins in the 2014/15 season, which was not in eleventh place in the final table Improvement meant. For the following season Sikma was signed by the Spanish top club from Valencia , where he played with Vladimir Lučić and had significantly more competition on the front court with his compatriot Justin Hamilton and Sekulić 'compatriot Bojan Dubljević . After an excellent start to the season, the team only suffered their first defeat in mid-January 2016. Although Valencia had defeated group winners EWE Baskets Oldenburg twice in the Eurocup 2015/16 , the following defeats meant the elimination in the second group phase for the record winner of this competition. In the Copa del Rey de Baloncesto equating lost the opening game against Gran Canaria and also in the ACB league of Hinrunden standings still fell by a total of six season defeats in the regular season in third place behind the Euro League participant FC Barcelona and Real Madrid back . After winning the first play-off round over Unicaja Málaga , Valencia finally lost the semi-final series after beating defending champions Real Madrid in four games.
In the 2016/17 season, Valencia defeated Gran Canaria in the "Copa del Rey" this time and after defeating runner-up Barcelona this time reached the final of the Spanish cup competition, which was won against the defending champion and previous double winner Real Madrid with 95– 97 was lost. In the EuroCup 2016/17 , Valencia suffered only one defeat in the 14 games of the two group phases and defeated the two German representatives ratiopharm Ulm and Alba Berlin twice each. In the quarter-final play-off, the team defeated BK Chimki in three games in the club duel of the two multiple winners of this competition, as well as in the semifinals in the duel against Hapoel Jerusalem , who had inflicted the only defeat on Valencia in the group stage and historically as the successor to the The winner of the first time was Valencia in the competition called ULEB Cup 2003/04 . In the Spanish club duel, the former permanent EuroLeague participant Unicaja Málaga was finally able to prevail in the third final duel held in Valencia with 63-58 and win his first title in this competition. Valencia lost a double-digit lead in the last quarter and missed their fourth title win in this competition after a slump with 18 unanswered points from Malaga in a row, as well as their second title of that season after losing the national cup final. After nine defeats of the season, Valencia finished tied with EL participant Saski Baskonia again in third place of the ACB regular season and was able to defeat Barcelona and then Baskonia in the play-offs. In the play-off final series they met the defending champion and main round first Real Madrid and, contrary to the disappointments caused by the previous defeats in the final, this time after only one defeat in four games and won the first Spanish championship for the club. After coach Pedro Martínez had already left the club, Sikma finally left the team that played in the EuroLeague for the following season after the end of his two-year contract.
Like Sikma, Himar Ojeda had worked in the Canary Islands for a long time and later as a scout for the Atlanta Hawks . After he was appointed sports director at the German first division club Alba Berlin at the beginning of 2016 , a position that he had filled for many years in a similar way for the CB Gran Canaria, he not only reactivated master coach Aíto García Reneses for the 2017/18 basketball Bundesliga had previously successfully trained the CB Gran Canaria for two years until 2016, but was also able to sign Sikma from Spain. Among the Berliners, Sikma plays with another compatriot from Seattle, who was initially nominated with him as the only two Berlin players for the BBL All-Star Game 2018. According to his own statement, Peyton only knew Siva Sikma by name before her time in Berlin and not yet personally. At the start of the EuroCup 2017/18 , Sikma was named player of the match day based on its effectiveness rating, but the team was eliminated from the competition in the second group phase after, among other things, two significant defeats against Gran Canaria. In the easycredit BBL-Pokal 2018 , the league cup of the highest German division, the Berliners reached the final, which was lost with 75-80 against BBL league leaders FC Bayern Munich , which after two previous defeats in the final in this competition for the first time in 50 years a German again Won the men's cup competition. Similar to the EuroCup final defeat with Valencia in the preseason, Sikma's team lost a double-digit lead in the final quarter.
