Útoyggjar
Útoyggjar [ ˈʉutˌɔʤːar ] ( Faroese " Outer Islands ") are those islands in the Faroe Islands which, due to their peripheral location and low population, are granted a special position, which is associated with financial support from the Faroese state government .
The eight outer islands
The eight outer islands are mostly the smaller islands, almost all of which are not served by car ferries. These include the inhabited islands of Fugloy , Svínoy , Kalsoy , Mykines , Hestur , Koltur , Skúvoy and Stóra Dímun .
Lítla Dímun is only inhabited by sheep and is therefore not counted. Since the incorporation of Nólsoy into the municipality of Tórshavn on January 1st, 2005, this island is no longer an outer island.
What all the outer islands have in common is that they are threatened with depopulation . The population on the eight islands fell from 340 people in 2007 to 240 in 2012. The islands can only be reached by ship ( Strandfaraskip Landsins ) or by helicopter ( Atlantic Airways ).
The populations on the eight islands differ considerably. The 222 people who lived on the Outer Islands in September 2016 were distributed as follows:

Útoyggjafelagið
In December 2001 the Útoyggjafelagið was founded, representing the interests of the small outer islands of the Faroe Islands. There are annual meetings that have the character of a folk festival for the islanders. These meetings, called Útoyggjarstevnan , take place in a different location every year. The general aim and purpose of the association is to promote the economic development of the small islands and their cooperation. The long-standing organizer of the cooperation in the association has been Olga Biskopstø since 2002.
