As depopulation , a process is known which makes a country or a region deserted and the existing population inventory greatly reduced and ultimately, the "extinction" of entire regions, settlements and cities result. The main cause is considered to be the strong migration of residents to other areas. Epidemics or pandemics (e.g. the plague ), famines (e.g. the Great Famine in Ireland ) and wars (e.g. the Thirty Years War ) were responsible for the depopulation of entire regions in the past centuries . Today the most common causes can be found in economic, political and social structures. So it can be due to structural weakness that z. For example, high unemployment results in large parts of the population emigrating (see New Federal States ). Another cause can be a severe lack of births, as well as natural disasters.
