The Ritan [ ɹiːtan ] ( Faroese rita = " Kittiwake ") is a small passenger ferry to the Faroe Islands , which several times a day from the port of Hvannasund ( Viðoy over the Fugloyarfjørður the islands) from Svínoy and Fugloy starts. All three islands belong to the North Islands . Until a few years ago, the Másin passenger ferry was on this route. It was taken out of service in 2010 and replaced by today's ferry.
The steel hull of the Ritan was built in Monnickendam in the Netherlands in 1971 . The launch took place on June 1st, the completion on October 1st, 1971. The 80.80 GRT measured ship can carry a maximum of 125 passengers. It is driven by two six - cylinder four - stroke diesel engines made by Volvo Penta of the type TAMD 122 A 86 7955, which act on two propellers via reduction gears. Two Volvo Penta diesel generators of the type D138-N MH (FE) and an emergency generator are available for power generation.
The ferry leaves Hvannasund four times a day in summer and three times a day in winter. The ferry takes half an hour from Hvannasund to Svínoy, a quarter of an hour from Svínoy to Kirkja on Fugloy and 10 minutes from Kirkja to Hattarvík . On the way back, it takes half an hour each from Hattarvík to Svínoy and from Svínoy to Hvannasund.
As an alternative, helicopters are available for the islanders . Until the helicopter service was introduced in 1984, the previous Másin ferry was the only means of public transport for the residents of Svínoy and Fugloy. In order to improve the travel conditions, consideration has been given for some time to setting up a cable car connection between Viðoy, Svínoy and Fugloy, as tunneling is too expensive.
