Kirkja [ ˈtʃʰɪɻtʃʰa ] ( Danish : Kirke , literally: Church ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the island of Fugloy , which is one of the six northern islands ( Norðoyggjar ).

Kirkja Church.

Kirkja is the only place on the small island of Fugloy, along with Hattarvík further east, and is located on its southern tip. In 2016, 27 people lived in the village and Kirkja is the larger of the two places in the Faroese municipality of Fugloyar kommuna, which has a total of 40 inhabitants . The postal code of Kirkja is FO-766.

The place has existed since the Middle Ages and is first mentioned in writing around 1350 to 1400 in the dog letter . The current church dates from 1933 , but as the place name suggests, there were other church buildings here before. Its style is reminiscent of the classic Faroese wooden churches . The altarpiece is by the famous painter Sámal Joensen-Mikines . There is also a small mom and pop shop in town.

Kirkja is not unlike the neighboring Hattarvík concrete from a depopulation threatened, but long-term we see here face an uncertain future.

Ship and air connections

Location of Kirkja on Fugloy.

If necessary and weather permitting, the Ritan passenger ferry , which also connects the neighboring island of Svínoy with Hvannasund on Viðoy , calls at the place once or twice a day . In addition to the hiking trail to Hattarvík, there has also been a car road since the 1980s . Since then, the Atlantic Airways helicopter has been operating three times a week , ensuring supplies to the islanders in (almost) any weather and directly with Vágar Airport , the capital Tórshavn and the regional metropolis of Klaksvík .

Attractions

Kirkja offers one of the most impressive panoramas in the country with a view of the mighty foothills of Svínoy and especially Viðoy with its Cape Enniberg . The hiking opportunities to Berg Klubbin with its unique view make the island attractive not only for bird watchers.
