Rúni Brattaberg (born January 1, 1966 in Vágur , Faroe Islands ) is a Danish opera singer ( bass ) and photographer.

Life

Rúni Brattaberg grew up in Vágur on the island of Suðuroy .

After graduating from high school in 1987, Rúni Brattaberg took courses at a college for photography and music in Odder, Denmark, from 1988 onwards . In 1991/92 he attended the art photography school "Fata Morgana" in Copenhagen .

Rúni Brattaberg has been married to the German opera singer Susanne Brattaberg since 2003. The couple lives in Sandur / Faroe Islands.

Vatnsdalur is a valley on Brattaberg's home island Suðuroy , which he photographed as a trained photographer for a stamp issue.

After graduating from high school, Rúni Brattaberg went to Copenhagen in 1991 to study photography . He successfully completed this apprenticeship in 1994, and in 1995, for example, two postage stamps from Postverk Føroya with landscape photos of him appeared.

Career as an opera singer

In 1993 Rúni Brattaberg, who had already played guitar in a rock band at the age of 10 and discovered his musical streak during this time, took classical singing lessons for the first time.

Rúni Brattaberg was already engaged as an opera singer at the opera houses in Aarhus and Copenhagen in mid-1995 .

In order to be able to work as a soloist from now on, Rúni Brattaberg completed his vocal training at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki from 1997 and at the Opera School in Zurich from 1999 .

From 2001 Rúni Brattaberg had his first engagement as a soloist at the Opera House of the State Theater Mainz . From 2005 to 2009 he sang at the opera houses a. a. in Bern , Usti nad Labem , Bonn , Detmold and Bremen . From 2009 to 2011 he had a permanent engagement at the Nationaltheater Mannheim . From 2009 to 2013 Rúni Brattaberg performed as Baron Ochs ( Der Rosenkavalier ) and Titurel ( Parsifal ) at the Metropolitan Opera in New York City .

From 2014 to 2018 he was part of the ensemble of the Leipzig Opera , where he played roles such as Gurnemanz ( Parsifal ), Hagen ( Götterdämmerung ), Grand Inquisitor ( Don Carlo ), Hunding ( Die Walküre ), Sarastro ( Die Zauberflöte ) and Osmin ( Die Entführung from the seraglio ) embodied.

Further guest engagements led Rúni Brattaberg u. a. to the Bavarian State Opera in Munich , the Opéra Bastille in Paris , the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels . His most recent commitments include a. Hagen in Odense , Fafner in Kassel and Grand Inquisitor in Saarbrücken .

In 2002 Rúni Brattaberg became known to an audience of millions when he sang the German and Faroese national anthems at the Faroese national team's soccer match in Hanover .

In 2004, the British composer Gavin Bryars wrote two operas that were specially tailored for Brattaberg and premiered in London . For the opera From Egil's Saga , the composer and singer recorded recordings of Brattaberg's voice in caves on the Faroe Islands, which were mixed into the sound during the performances using live electronics.

He was able to experience his home country twice in 2005: when he visited the Danish Royal Family in Gjógv , where he sang in the open air, and at the Listastevna Føroya , the annual art festival in the House of the North , where he worked with the Faroese Symphony Orchestra and his wife Susanne occurred.
