Við Gjógv [ ʤɛgv ] (literally: [near] the crevice , Danish : Gjov ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the northeast coast of Eysturoy .

Gjógv is the Faroese word for crevice. The place takes its name from the crevice in which there is a small natural harbor.

History and sights

The main attraction of the village is the crevice, after which the village is named, with the natural harbor, which is said to have been used as early as the time of the Vikings.

The school dates from 1884 and the church from 1929 . The church made history in the Faroe Islands when it was consecrated in the Faroese language on May 26, 1929 as the country's first church . The provost Jákup Dahl gave clear instructions on this because it was a general wish of the population at the time. The church is also the first church in this place. Before that, the residents had to wander to Funningur for church services . The corresponding road was not built until 1960 .

Not far from the church is - as in many other places in the Faroe Islands - a small park with a memorial for the fishermen who stayed at sea. Their names are given on the plaques in the park. The bronze monument was created in 1971 by Fridtjof Joensen (1920–88), one of the most important Faroese artists of the 20th century.

In 1995 Ingo Kühl painted watercolors in Gjógv, based on which the nine-part Faroe Islands picture cycle was created, which was exhibited in the Royal Danish Embassy in Berlin in 2003/2004.

On June 22, 2005 the village was visited by Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary , where the famous opera singer Rúni Brattaberg sang for them.
