Norðskáli [ ˈnoːɹˌskɔaːlɪ ] or Norðskála ( Danish : Nordskåle ) is a place in the Faroe Islands on the island of Eysturoy .
Norðskáli is located, like Oyrarbakki in the south , on the west coast of Eysturoy, directly north of the bridge built in 1973 over the Sundini Sund to Streymoy .
The place name is possibly related to the village Skáli further south , whereby the direction of the compass was put in front of the place in the north for purposes of distinction. In the Middle Ages, the term skáli was used to describe a hut or an outbuilding for temporary residence.
The village church dates from 1932 and most of the other houses are also more recent. Road 10, which comes from Streymoy, continues east through Norðskálatunnilin, built in 1976 . Due to the development of the road network with bridge and tunnel in the 1970s, the place is located in the area of a centrally located traffic junction and various companies subsequently settled in the vicinity, which offered the residents of Norðskáli new job opportunities. From 1964 to 1990 the place even had its own post office. Since then, the nearest post office is in Oyrarbakki.
There is a café with dining options in Norðskáli.
If you follow the road behind the bridge to the north, you will pass through Svínáir and Ljósá to the well-known town of Eiði and from there to the highest mountain on the Faroe Islands, the 880 m high Slættaratindur and further to the northernmost town on Eysturoy, the village of Gjógv .
