Funningur [ ˈfʊnːɪŋgʊɹ ] ( Danish : Funding ) is one of the oldest places in the Faroe Islands and is located on the northeast coast of Eysturoy .

Funningur is located on the long fjord Funningsfjørður , at the end of which is the place of the same name Funningsfjørður (which is on the eastern side of the fjord and therefore belonged to Runavíkar municipality before 2009 ).

The region around Funningur is characteristic of the middle and upper level of the basalt .
