Sigurð Joensen

Jóhan Hendrik Sigurð Joensen (born April 27, 1911 in Gjógv , Faroe Islands , † October 1, 1993 in Tórshavn ) was a co-founder of the republican party Tjóðveldisflokkurin and a writer.

Sigurð was born in 1911 to Elspa Maria, née Weihe from Oyndarfjørður and Kristian Jóhan Joensen from Gjógv. He was married to Sigrið av Skarði from Tórshavn, the daughter of Símun av Skarði . Together they had seven children, including their daughter Turið Sigurðardóttir . Another daughter, Bergljót av Skarði (born 1950), is the mother of Sólrun Løkke Rasmussen (born 1968), the wife of the Danish Prime Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen . Another daughter, Lív Joensen (born 1942), is the mother of the Faroese actress and poet Sigri Mitra Gaïni .

In 1944 Sigurð Joensen took his law exam and was initially employed as a lawyer in Copenhagen City Hall . He then opened his own law firm, which he was to run until 1984. After that he sat on the Faroese Language Council until his death .

As a Faroese politician, he was one of the co-founders of the republican party Tjóðveldisflokkurin in 1948 with Erlendur Patursson , Jákup í Jákupsstovu and Hanus við Høgadalsá , which fights for the state sovereignty of the Faroe Islands and the complete separation from the Kingdom of Denmark. 1958-1970 he represented his party as a member of the national parliament, the Løgting .

In 1987 he received the Faroe Islands Culture Prize, Mentanarvirðisløn MA Jacobsens .
