Erlendur Pætur Patursson (born August 20, 1913 in Kirkjubøur , Faroe Islands ; † June 16, 1986 ibid) was a Faroese writer and, as a politician, co-founder of the republican Tjóðveldisflokkurin .

Life

Erlendur was the son of Jóannes Patursson and his Icelandic wife Guðný Eiríksdóttir. He was married to Morið, née Holm from Hvalba .

He went to school in Iceland. After graduating from high school, he first studied in Reykjavík from 1933 and then went to Oslo and Copenhagen . In 1940 he made his cand. Pol. to political economist . He then worked as editor-in-chief . Erlendur Patursson was one of the Faroese who was stranded in Copenhagen during the war. He did not return to the Faroe Islands until 1945. In 1948 he was together with Jákup í Jákupsstovu , Sigurð Joensen and Hanus við Høgadalsá among the co-founders of the left-wing Republican party Tjóðveldisflokkurin. 1958–1966 and 1970–1986 he was a member of the Faroese parliament in Løgting . 1973–1977 he was one of the two Faroese MPs in the Danish Folketing and 1963–1967 Minister in the state government of the Faroe Islands .

As Faroese representative in the Nordic Council , he fought for equality between the autonomous regions of Åland (Finland), Greenland and Faroe Islands (both Denmark), and the Sami people . He was unable to assert himself with this, but managed to get Åland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands to have their own delegations. He is also considered to be the initiator of the House of the North , as well as the collaboration of the West Nordic (Greenland, Icelandic and Faroese) parliamentarians in a separate organization since 1986.

Patursson was also chairman of the Faroe Islands Fishermen's Association. In 1981 he was awarded the Faroe Islands Literature Prize for specialist literature for his five-volume fishing history of the Faroe Islands Fiskiveiði - fiskimenn (1850-1939) I, II and Fiskivinna og Fiskivinnumál (1940-1970) I, II, III. The reason given was that he had created an indispensable standard work on the history of the main branch of the economy in his country.

The expansion of the Faroese fishing areas to initially 12 nautical miles and later to 200 nautical miles as well as the transfer of the rights to the subsoil under the islands to the Faroe Islands are also counted to Patursson's merits.
