Símun av Skarði [ ˈsʊimʊn ɛaf ˈskɛaɹɪ ] (born May 3, 1872 in Skarð , Faroe Islands ; † October 9, 1942 in Tórshavn ) was a Faroese teacher of history and languages , together with Rasmus Rasmussen he is the founder of the Faroe Islands folk high school .

Símun av Skarði is also known as the poet of the Faroe Islands' national anthem . He is one of the pioneers in the implementation of the Faroese language in the popular education of the Faroese .

Life

Símun is the son of Elsa (née Matras from Viðareiði ) and Johannes Johannessen from Skarð. From Skarð means av Skarði in Faroese and was then taken as a family name.

Símun av Skarði studied at the Faroe School of Education ( Føroya Læraraskúli ) until 1896 and then spent three years in Denmark, where he met his compatriot Rasmus Rasmussen. Together they summarized the plan to found a community college based on Grundtvig's model in the Faroe Islands . Immediately after her return to the Faroe Islands in 1899, the VHS Fagralíð west of Klaksvík was opened.

In 1901 Símun av Skarði married Sanna Jacobsen , whom he knew from his studies at the teachers' college in Tórshavn . Together they had the daughter Sigrid av Skarði Joensen (1908-1975). In 1909 they moved to the capital with the Klaksvík Adult Education Center. In 1911 the son Jóhannes av Skarði was born.

From 1906 to 1914 Símun av Skarði sat for the Sjálvstýrisflokkurin (self-employment party, founded in 1906) in Løgting .

Símun av Skarði played a decisive role in shaping the Faroese language dispute through the power of the factual , because his adult education center was the first school in the Faroe Islands where the Faroese language was on the curriculum. And by no means just as a language course. All other subjects were also taught in Faroese. Until his death in 1942 he was the head of the adult education center.
