Jóhannes av Skardi

Jóhannes av Skarði [ ˈjɔuhanːɛs ɛau ˈskɛaɹɪ ] (born April 7, 1911 in Tórshavn , Faroe Islands ; † January 24, 1999 ) was a Faroese linguist .

He is best known abroad as the author of the dictionaries Danish - Faroese (1967) and English- Faroese (1984). They are the only dictionaries of this type.

Jóhannes was born in Tórshavn in 1911 as the son of Símun av Skarði and Sanna Jacobsen . On June 18, 1945 he married Paulina, born in 1923 from Sandvík . Together they have the children Símun (* April 27, 1945), Hans Jákup (* August 26, 1946), Sanna (* October 4, 1949) and Aleksandra (* September 10, 1955).

In the winter semester of 1925/26 he attended his parents' folk high school in the Faroe Islands . An apprenticeship as a craftsman followed until 1929. In the same year he went to Norway , where, in addition to his work on a farm, he attended Voss Folkehøgskole in the winter semester of 1929/30 . In 1932 he passed his pre- exam at the Høng Eksamenskursus in Denmark and in 1934 the Abitur at the Høng Gymnasium there . He studied at the Copenhagen College of Education until 1938 and then returned to the Faroe Islands, where he was an assistant teacher at the Adult Education Center until 1942. After the death of his father Símun in 1942, he took over his post as director for ten years. He continued to teach there until 1976.

In 1972/73 he was released for his scientific work as a dictionary author and lived in Iceland , where he took part in lectures at the local pedagogical college.
