Sandvík is a small Faroese village in the far north on the east coast of Suðuroy . The village, which had exactly 87 inhabitants at the beginning of 2015, is the northernmost place on the south island of Suðuroy. A 1.5 kilometer long tunnel leads here from the southern neighboring town of Hvalba .
Surname
The name Sandvík means sandy bay and indicates a sandy beach that is relatively rare for the Faroe Islands. The part of the name vík (bay) means that a resident in Faroese is called sandvíkingur ( pronunciation : [ ˈsanvɪʃɪŋgʊɹ ], pl. Sandvíkingar), meaning sand vikings .
history
The place is already mentioned in the Faroese saga as a place of refuge for the Faroese Viking chief Sigmundur Brestisson around 1005 , who was immediately killed here by the local farmer Torgrímur Illi .
In 1349 all residents of the village died of the plague . It was not settled again until 1816 by people from Hvalba. Sandvík has been known as Hvalvík ("whale bay") since the Middle Ages . Since another place in the Faroe Islands is already called that and it was always confused with the mail delivery, Sandvík got the old name back in 1911 . Before the tunnel to Hvalba was built in 1969, the place could only be reached by water or on foot over the mountains.
Attractions
Sandvík Church was built in Froðba in 1840 , later stood in Tvøroyri and moved to its present location in 1908 .
The small village museum of Sandvík is located in a typical old house from 1860 .
A narrow road leads from Sandvík to the west coast of the island, where the well-known free-standing cliff Ásmundarstakkur (97 m) stands and thousands of puffins can be observed.
