history

Until the church is planted

Archaeological finds from the later Bronze Age prove that there was human settlement in the Poppenrichter municipality as early as 3000 years ago. The first documentary mention of the place Poppenricht took place in 1150.

Three and a half centuries later, the place was affected by the armed conflicts of the Landshut War of Succession . When the war was finally ended in 1505 by an arbitration award by the German King Maximilian I of Habsburg , the Duchy of Palatinate-Neuburg , the so-called Young Palatinate, was formed . In addition to Poppenricht itself, the two current parts of the municipality of Häringlohe and Wirnsricht were also added to this new duchy. This created a territorial border that ran through the current municipality of Poppenricht for almost three centuries. The so-called Bayerischer Brückl , an arch bridge that was built in the 18th century and was located on this border at the time, is a reminder of this time . There is also a Steinmarterl built around 1700 near the bridge, which also gives an idea of the borderline at that time.

In the following century, the Thirty Years' War , which broke out in 1618, once again caused war-related destruction in the Poppenrichter area. The place itself was plundered on September 30, 1621 by 50 musketeers from a League Army under the command of Tilly , further devastation followed in the course of this longest war ever to be fought on German soil. In 1628 the Electorate of Bavaria received the territories of the Upper Palatinate, which had been occupied since 1621, from the Habsburg Emperor Ferdinand II as war compensation. In the course of this compulsory integration, most parts of the municipality of today's Poppenricht came under Bavarian rule.

The remaining parts of the municipality of Poppenricht, including the main town itself, had belonged to the then newly formed Duchy of Pfalz-Sulzbach since 1614 . Against the resistance of the Count Palatine August , who remained loyal to the Lutheran faith, the Counter Reformation was implemented there in 1627/1628 . The Count Palatine could only protest against this compulsory measure in vain, because the Duchy of Palatinate-Sulzbach had initially remained under the sovereignty of Palatinate-Neuburg after its creation, so that the principle Cuius regio, eius religio could be applied here. It was not until August's son, Count Palatine Christian August , that Protestantism was reintroduced into his dominion after the Thirty Years' War. In 1652, in the so-called Cologne settlement , the latter reached a compromise with the Catholic Pfalz-Neuburg, which, among other things, provided for the introduction of the Simultaneum in Pfalz-Sulzbach, which was implemented the following year. Due to the regulations established in the Cologne settlement, Count Palatine Christian August converted to Catholicism in 1656, but the Simultaneum continued to exist afterwards. In Poppenricht it was only finished in 1962 after more than three centuries.

Gasthof zu den Drei Mohren

An important milestone in Poppenricht's community history was the year 1792, when the Gasthof zu den Drei Mohren was built (demolished in 2017). This inn functioned not only as an important meeting place, but also represented an important stage on the trunk road coming from the west and continuing in the direction of Amberg. French troops marched along this road during the First Coalition War in the summer of 1796 in order to attempt to conquer Amberg. However, the Austrian defenders of the city were able to hold it until they received reinforcements from the south. Then the Austrians went over to the counterattack, from which the so-called Battle of Amberg developed from August 22 to 24 . The decisive battles of this battle took place on August 24th around the Sünderbühl , a small hill just south of today's Poppenrichter district of Witzlhof. In this place alone, around 700 soldiers of the defeated French army lost their lives.

20th century

The chapter of acts of war in and around Poppenricht ended on April 22, 1945 with the invasion of American troops at the end of the Second World War .

Incorporations

In the course of the municipal territorial reform , the previously independent municipality of Traßlberg, which had been reduced in size on July 1, 1972 in favor of the city of Amberg , was incorporated into the municipality of Poppenricht on May 1, 1978 .
