Parish Church of St. Jakob (former monastery church)

Until the church is planted

Traces of prehistory and early history can be found on the Ensdorf ring wall . The first written mention of the place comes from the year 1028. Excavations at the so-called Stephansturm, the only remnant of the parish church of St. Stephan, which was demolished in 1805, provided evidence of a church from the 10th century. Dendrochronological studies have shown that the tower was built in 1075. It is therefore one of the oldest structures in the Upper Palatinate. Until secularization in 1802, Ensdorf belonged to the Ensdorf Monastery , founded in 1121 by Count Palatine Otto V. von Scheyern and Bishop Otto von Bamberg , one of the oldest monasteries in today's Upper Palatinate. The place was part of the Electorate of Bavaria, but formed a closed Hofmark , whose seat was the monastery. In the course of the administrative reforms in Bavaria , today's municipality was created with the municipal edict of 1818 .

20th century

The Salesians of Don Bosco have settled in the former Benedictine monastery since 1920 .
