Niels Christopher Winther (born July 2, 1822 in Tórshavn / Faroe Islands , † February 24, 1892 ) was a Faroese lawyer, politician and author. He is also considered the first modern politician in the history of the Faroe Islands .

Life

Niels Winther was born in the capital Tórshavn as the son of Sigga Maria (née Karlsbech) and Niels Christopher Winther senior. He later married Anna Maria Nicolina Kjærgaard.

He was trained as a lawyer in Denmark.

With Færingetidende ("Färingerzeitung") on May 13, 1852 he published the country's first newspaper . It appeared in Danish and was banned again after only 9 issues. He also wrote Færøernes Oldtidshistorie (Faroese Ancient History) in 1875 .

As a politician, Niels Winther was a member of the Løgting from 1852 to 1857. He is generally considered to be the one who campaigned most vehemently for the re-establishment of this old parliament, which was abolished by Denmark in 1816 . He had been in the Danish Folketing since 1851 (also until 1857).

On May 19, 2008 Niels C. Winther will be honored with a stamp from Postverk Føroya .
