Hans Jacob Debes

Hans Jacob Debes (born July 17, 1940 in Gjógv , Faroe Islands , † January 26, 2003 ) was a Faroese historian .

Debes grew up in the village of Gjógv on Eysturoy and went to elementary school there. In the years 1955-57 he went to sea on Faroese fishing trawlers and Icelandic trawlers. In 1959 he graduated from secondary school in Tórshavn and in 1962 his high school diploma in modern languages.

In 1970 he passed his teaching exams for history and English at the learned college in Copenhagen. He was subsequently a teacher at Føroya Studentaskúli grammar school until he was appointed lecturer at the University of the Faroe Islands in 1986 . In 1986 he received his doctorate from Háskóla Íslands with the thesis “Nú er tann stundin ...” (“Now is the hour ...” refers to a poem by Jóannes Patursson , with which the Faroese national movement began). In 1989 he was appointed Professor of General History at the University of the Faroe Islands.

1973–90 he was also a board member of the Faroe Islands Adult Education Center , 1988–92 of the House of the North , 1975–78 of the Faroese school administration, 1988–92, the state school board, and chairman of the Húsalánsgrunnin (building society) 1975–79 and 1989–91.

1986-88 he was also a member of the Løgting for the Republican Party .
