The son of the businessman Hans Michael Ancher and Ellen Elisabeth Munch moved to Copenhagen in 1870/71 , where he first attended the law faculty, as well as C. V. Nielsen's drawing school and then the Royal Danish Art Academy . Ancher made his debut as a painter in 1874 and went on long trips, including to Paris and Italy .

After a first visit in 1874, Ancher settled in Skagen on the northern tip of Denmark. Together with his wife, the painter Anna Ancher , whom he married in 1880, and other friends and family members, Ancher built the artist group of Skagen painters . She maintained international contacts, but remained committed to Skagen and its special lighting conditions caused by the meeting of the North and Baltic Seas .

The Norwegian painter Peder Severin Krøyer was his rival, but also his friend.

Ancher made sure during his lifetime that the Skagen painters had their own museum at the place where they worked. His own house, Michael & Anna Anchers Hus , can also be visited; the daughter Helga Ancher (1883–1964) also became a painter; she bequeathed her parents' house to a museum foundation.
