The Steinsche Gasse underground station is a tunnel station for the light rail system in downtown Duisburg . It belongs to the Duisburg Stadtbahn network .
Location and design
Steinschen Gasse is a main road on the border between the Dellviertel and the old town . The entrances to the underground station are on the edge of this street and are only a few hundred meters away from the Königsgalerie Duisburg , the cultural center around Dellplatz and the city hall . The Duisburg Inner Harbor is located about half a kilometer to the northwest .
As early as 1980, twelve years before the station opened, the responsible project committee in the city council decided on its artistic design, and this concept was also applied to six other underground stations. On Steinschen Gasse this is implemented in the form of a colored design for the small-format wall tiles; white is the dominant color. The responsible artists were Gunnar and Walter Volkmann.
Due to the use of both high-floor light rail vehicles and tram vehicles with low-floor entrances, the existing central platform is divided into a high-floor part roughly into the front two-thirds seen in the direction of travel and a low-floor part in the rear third.
The train station is the only underground station of the Duisburg Stadtbahn that is not barrier-free, as it does not have a lift due to its location directly under the "Steinsche Gasse" traffic axis from which it is named. The installation of an elevator is planned for the next few years, also in view of the future mandatory accessibility in local public transport.
In addition, the station had a public toilet on the "Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz" distribution level, which has since been closed.
history
The underground station was created in connection with the tunneling under the Duisburg city center. The idea of an underground route for the light rail system came up in the 1960s, to increase the attractiveness of the city center and also to meet the standards of a city of this size. In 1974 the construction of the line began, which caused total costs of around one billion Deutschmarks until completion . On July 11, 1992, the underground line was inaugurated together with the associated train stations.
