The Tonhalle / Ehrenhof U-Bahn (formerly: Tonhalle U-Bahn ) is a station on the Düsseldorf Stadtbahn . It is located in the course of the second trunk line on the edge of the old town of the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital Düsseldorf . The underground station , built above ground between the individual traffic lanes on the ramp of the Oberkasseler Bridge , was opened to traffic on August 6, 1988. Since then, it has opened up the numerous cultural institutions in the immediate vicinity. In addition to the namesake Tonhalle andEhrenhof also includes the Düsseldorf Art Academy . The underground station is served by the U70, U74, U75, U76 and U77 light rail lines. There is a possibility of changing to the SB50 express bus line.

location

Location in the city area

The light rail lines coming from the left bank of the Rhine reach the center of the city after crossing the Rhine .

Behind the Tonhalle / Ehrenhof underground station, the tram route is led via a ramp to the east into the inner city tunnel of the Düsseldorf tram. There it meets the first trunk line , which carries traffic from Duisburg or the north of Düsseldorf to the city center. There are transfer connections between the routes at the following underground station, Heinrich-Heine-Allee , which opens up the central parts of Düsseldorf city center.

The train station, on the border of the old town and Pempelfort district, is the central point of entry and exit for visitors to the numerous surrounding cultural institutions. This includes the Tonhalle opposite the train station in the north. This was created as part of the GeSoLei in the 1920s together with the courtyard of honor to the north. Since 1979 it has housed the largest concert hall in the city with 1,933 seats in the great hall and 300 in the chamber music hall. The Ehrenhof complex also houses the NRW Forum , a building for temporary exhibitions, and the Kunstpalast Museum with the Robert Schumann Hall inside . To the west is the bank of the Rhine. To the east, the Hofgarten is the largest green space in downtown Düsseldorf.

In the south is the building of the Düsseldorf Art Academy . For decades it has been one of the most important universities of its kind in Europe and is a training center for over 350 students. The Rhine promenade also begins at the level of the Art Academy . For these and the west bank of the Rhine, the underground station is the only connection to the light rail network.

history

Underpass with access to the underground station

According to the original plans from the 1970s, the inner city tunnel of the second trunk line should go into operation as early as 1983. However, problems with financing resulted in a delay in the start of construction. This finally took place at the beginning of 1979.

In various planning variants, an underground route for the tram under the Rhine was also considered. However, this idea was not implemented for reasons of cost. When the Oberkassel Bridge was rebuilt and then moved between 1969 and 1976, a separate area had already been prepared on the structure for the rails of the streetcar and thus for the later urban railway.

The Tonhalle / Ehrenhof underground station was not included in the original plans for the second trunk line. Like many other above-ground stops, this was not previously served by the Düsseldorf tram . After crossing the Oberkasseler Bridge, it only stopped at Ratinger Tor . The greater distance between the stops between the Heinrich-Heine-Allee underground station and the Luegplatz stop in Oberkassel , which has now arisen as a result of the tram , led to the planning of a new stop halfway. The construction work was only started in the further course of the overall work for the inner city tunnel. The construction work for the inner city tunnel was completed in 1988. In the course of the year the new line was connected to the existing one. On May 7th of the same year, operations began on the underground section between the main station and Klever Strasse . To do this, it was necessary to demolish the existing ramp of the north tunnel at the height of the opera house. Three months after the first trunk line had threaded into the inner city tunnel, the second trunk line was introduced into it on August 6, 1988. In the course of this opening, the stop, then known as the Tonhalle underground station, went into operation on the same day.

The renovation of the courtyard in the 1990s increased its importance and increased the expectations of visitors. To take this into account and to clarify the importance of the newly created museums, the name of the underground station, which until then only ran the neighboring Tonhalle in the same, was supplemented by the addition of the courtyard of honor.

Station complex

The underground station is built at street level between two directional lanes . As a result, the access for the passengers is established through a pedestrian underpass. The middle platform is high-floor and thus enables barrier-free entry and exit in the vehicles of the light rail. This and the lack of crossings for pedestrians in the track area mean that the station conforms to the underground standard . The platform length is 60 meters, so that the station can be approached by light rail vehicles in double traction .

The edge of the platform is made of light-colored concrete stone and thus stands out visually from the area otherwise paved with red brick. The massive structure is designed with a row of trees planted in the middle of the platform. The furniture is in metallic colors, similar to that used in the other subway stations of the first, second and third generation. Two larger showcase walls provide passenger information and also serve as a notice area for the adjacent cultural facilities. Two parking facilities are arranged along the platform. They are each aligned with one direction of travel and thus, with their glass walls, offer protection from the weather on three sides.

Access to the platforms is only established on the eastern side. An inclined elevator and a fixed staircase are available to passengers here . Both are protected from the weather by a structure. This consists of a steel construction, which is filled with glass surfaces. It is the distinctive feature of the underground station and is an eye-catcher.

The construction and design of this station is not to be found again in the entire Düsseldorf light rail network, while the underground stations each have at least one structurally similar counterpart .

The underpass , which connects the parts of the city north and south of the bridge ramp, can be reached via the stairs and the elevator . Like the platform flooring, it is made of red brick. The eastern wall was designed by an art installation . The interplay of several small photos illuminated in the background results in a large image reduced to colors.

traffic

The Tonhalle / Ehrenhof underground station is on the second trunk line of the Düsseldorf light rail network. All five lines on this route serve the station. In addition to the transfer options between the individual tram lines, there has been a transfer option to the SB50 express bus line to the Rheinterrassen and Haan since December 2009 .

The neighboring cities on the left bank of the Rhine and the districts of Lörick , Heerdt and Oberkassel can be reached via the express line from Krefeld and the other supplementary lines from Meerbusch and Neuss . In the direction of the old town there is a connection to the central transfer point Heinrich-Heine-Allee. There you can change to several bus lines and the so-called Wehrhahn Line . Behind the Düsseldorf Hbf transfer station , which connects the Stadtbahn with the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn and other connections in regional and long-distance traffic, the southeastern districts of Lierenfeld , Eller , Oberbilk and Wersten are located in the further course of the first and second trunk route , Holthausen and Benrath connected.

All light rail lines that run here are operated by the Düsseldorf Rheinbahn with high-floor light rail vehicles of the type B80D . On the U75 line, converted GT8SU vehicles from GT8S trams also run.
