The Frankfurter Straße underground station is an underground stop on Line 1 of the Cologne Stadtbahn , which is located below Frankfurter Straße, but was otherwise built in a semi-open trough design. The station is located in the Höhenberg district of Cologne and was opened as the first station at the beginning of the Deutz-Kalker-Tunnel in 1979. The station has two side platforms and two direct stairways to Frankfurter Strasse from each platform. Although there are no escalators or elevators, the stop is barrier-free thanks to very long, stepless ramps from the platforms to the street level.

The addition "Höhenberg" in the name of the stop is necessary because about 2 km further north line 3 crosses Frankfurter Straße at ground level in the Buchheim district , the stop there is called "Buchheim Frankfurter Straße". In addition, a few kilometers further south there is also a station of the Cologne S-Bahn called Cologne Frankfurter Straße .

location

The station is located in the Höhenberg district of Cologne under Frankfurter Straße, at the intersection with Höhenberger Kirchweg and Merheimer Heideweg. The stop is in the immediate vicinity of the Höhenberg Sports Park , formerly the airport stadium, where FC Viktoria Köln plays its home games. The Deutz-Kalker Tunnel ends about 50 meters into town in front of the stop under Höhenberger Kirchweg, and the tracks cross under Frankfurter Straße in an open trough construction about 5 meters deep. As you head out of town, the track rises to Merheimer Heide, then about 700 meters further in the direction of Bensberg to cross the A3 motorway at the Kalker Friedhof.

Line 1 continues out of town via Merheim and Brück to Bensberg . Into town she goes under the Kalker main road where it joins at the station limestone chapel with the line 9, then via Deutz and Deutz bridge into the city, and then leaves the city almost straight west on the old Roman road Aachenerstraße over the Rheinenergiestadion to Weiden. You can change to bus routes 151 and 152 in the direction of Cologne-Porz and Leverkusen Chemical Park S-Bahn .

In the regular service of the KVB only light rail cars of the type K4000 and K4500 stop at Frankfurter Straße, that is about 300 trips from line 1 on weekdays at this station. Due to its location in front of the Merheim depot, however, there have been almost as many journeys by trains arriving and departing, so-called E-trains, which also stop here since 2007 , especially in the early morning hours and in the evening. Like the other stations of the Deutz-Kalker Tunnel, Fuldaer Straße , Kalk Kapelle , Kalk Post and Deutz Technical University , these trains also stop here and allow passengers to change. This means that the station also has individual daily connections without changing to the high-floor lines 3, 4 and 5, as well as to the low-floor lines 12 and 15. In total, around 500 trains stop at the station every working day.

layout

The outer walls of the side platforms and the stairways to the street level are noticeable because they are artistically designed in the graffiti style. In 2008 the bus stop was beautified into its current condition by the Cologne youth art project "Wednesday Painter", until then the outer walls were made of dark red clinker bricks.
