The Fuldaer Straße underground station is a tunnel station on Line 1 of the Cologne city railway . The station is located in the Höhenberg district of Cologne and was opened in 1979 as the first complete tunnel station of the Deutz-Kalker-Tunnel after the half-open underground station Höhenberg Frankfurter Straße . The station has two side platforms and is relatively simple with only one exit and no distribution level.

location

The train station is located in Cologne's Höhenberg district under Höhenberger Kirchweg, at the intersection of Fuldaer Straße and Münchener Straße. Coming from the Kalker Hauptstraße, the tunnel was swiveled from the Kalk freight yard so that the route is not under Olpener Straße (continuation of Kalker Hauptstraße), but about 100 meters further north, parallel to Höhenberger Kirchweg. The passage under the freight station is noticeable through numerous support pillars in the tunnel, which are probably embedded between the tracks for structural reasons.

Line 1 continues out of town via Merheim and Brück to Bensberg . Into town it leads under the Kalker main road where they are joined at the station limestone chapel with the line 9, then via Deutz and Deutz bridge into the city, and then leaves the city almost straight west on the old Roman road Aachenerstraße over the Rheinenergiestadion to Weiden. You can change to bus route 153 in the direction of Vingst , Humboldt / Gremberg and Deutz in the south or in the north in the direction of Mülheim and Stammheim .

service

In the regular service of the KVB only trams of the type K4000 and K4500 stop on Fuldaer Straße, that is about 300 trips from line 1 on weekdays at this station. Due to its location in front of the Merheim depot, however, since 2007, especially in the early morning hours and in the evening, there have been almost as many journeys by trains arriving and departing, so-called e-cars , which also stop here. Like the other stations of the Deutz-Kalker Tunnel Höhenberg Frankfurter Straße , Kalk Kapelle , Kalk Post and Deutz Technische Hochschule , these trains also stop here and allow passengers to change. This means that the station also has individual daily connections to the high-floor lines 3, 4 and 5, as well as to the low-floor lines 12 and 15, without having to change trains. In total, around 500 trains stop at the station every weekday.

layout

The stairs and escalators from the entrance / exit end on a platform that is 55 centimeters above the platform surface, from which a few steps lead down to the platform 35 cm above the top of the rails (SOK). The original plan was to raise the low platforms to 90 cm above the SOK if, after the Duewag trams were taken out of service, only light rail vehicles (at that time only high-floor) were to be used. These plans were discarded because the low-floor wagons that have been developed in the meantime and have only been used in regular service since 2007 stop. However , there are no plans to build lifts and ramps that would make the station barrier-free. Many high-floor vehicles also stop here, for which the height of the lower escalator ends was actually intended.

With a length of 110 meters, the platforms at this stop are the longest in the light rail network.

The walls are tiled, like all other KVB stations from this time. The tiles are mainly light blue, but dark blue and white tiles can also be found in the pattern.

The two platforms, a fence and red pillars that extend to the tunnel ceiling separate the platforms. At the only exit there is a kiosk at ground level, in which no tickets are sold, a bus stop and now closed indentations for former telephone booths.
