Walk on the Rheinbaben dump

The Rheinbaben dump is located in Gladbeck between Ellinghorst and Bottrop - Boy south of the A2 . On the mound was excavated from the mine Rheinbaben deposited. After the colliery was closed in 1967, the site was largely left to its own devices. Since 2001 it has been designated as a nature reserve and accessible via walking paths.

The approximately 20 hectare heap, which protrudes about 20 meters above the surrounding level on the south side, together with the Ellinghorst heap to the north of the A2, is part of the Gladbeck landscape plan No. 4.The aim is to maintain and further develop the near-natural habitats. The heap is also used for scientific observation, its unguided spontaneous greening is compared with the planned recultivation of other heaps.

The site is bordered by a railway line in the east, the Rheinbaben industrial estate in the south and the Boye in the west. The heap itself is overgrown with a light birch forest, in the steep and partly unstable locations on the edge of the hilltop and on the slopes there are still half-open grasslands. Sycamore maples have settled in the northeast, hornbeams and red oaks in the east, and there is also a recultivated forest of gray alder and red oak. The forest areas also contain parts of dead wood. There are some wetlands due to bomb craters and at times water-bearing trenches. The biotope is very rich in structure, the sometimes extremely dry and warm, in other places very acidic locations offer space for specialists such as reptiles, butterflies and grasshoppers.

In addition to the forest, there are also typical plants (extract):
