Pine, birch and oak in the Üfter Mark

The Üfter Mark is a closed forest area in the North Rhine-Westphalian circles Borken , Recklinghausen and Wesel at the junction of the natural environment Niederrheinische sand plates to the western Münsterland .

Geographical location

The actual Üfter Mark is located in the Hohe Mark-Westmünsterland Nature Park between the Schermbeck farmers ’Üfte and the Dorstener district of Rhade . The name Üfter Mark is used today for the entire forest area between Raesfeld-Alder and Dorsten-Holsterhausen . The Bakeler Mark, the Emmelkämper Mark and the Rüster Mark also belong to this 1,700  hectare forest area. The forest area is cut through by the federal highways 224 and 58 and the federal highway 31 .

history

The original forest was probably cleared in the 17th century for pastures and arable land. In 1822 only about 3% of the area was forested. In the second half of the 19th century, the areas were reforested with pine trees to cover the wood requirements of the Ruhr mining industry - the "Augustus Trade Union" forest came into being. In addition, sand was mined in some places. In 2002, the Ruhr Regional Association (RVR) bought the forest area from the Mannesmann Group in order to develop it into a "nature experience area".

Nature discovery area

The nature experience area is being developed by the RVR subsidiary "Ruhr Grün". The predominantly monocultural pine forest is to give way in the long term to a natural deciduous mixed forest. For this purpose, pedunculate oaks are planted and other deciduous trees such as birch and alder are promoted.

One of the noteworthy facilities is a barrier-free circular hiking trail with information boards for the blind . In addition, viewing platforms are planned to observe the approximately 200 red deer from the Üfter Mark.

Nature reserves

Often Mark

In the 34 hectare nature reserve “Üfter Mark”, mostly heathland areas are protected. As part of the nationwide network of dry heathland biotopes, the “Üfter Mark” nature reserve represents a link between the dry heathland of the northern Lower Rhine lowlands and the Westmünsterland. Acid birch and oak forests grow in individual areas; Individual specimens of the common juniper within the pine forests in the eastern part of the area are of cultural and historical importance as relics of the formerly widespread juniper heaths .

Game feeding in the Üfter Mark

Woodlarks , northern gray shrike , stonechat , black woodpecker and goat milker can be found in the nature reserve as species of community interest according to the fauna, flora, habitat and bird protection guidelines .

In the nature reserve there are groundwater wells of the waterworks Dorsten-Holsterhausen of RWW.

Witte Berge and Deutener Moor

Heideweiher "Black Fens"

The drifting sand dunes and the Deutener Moor have been protected as an 85 hectare nature reserve "Witte Berge und Deutener Moor" since 1931 . Here, too, a juniper heather has been preserved, and various heather herbs grow in other dry locations . The "Black Venn" and the wetlands of the Brest Hausener meadow Moors form habitats for rare plants such as the round-leaved and middle sundew and endangered amphibians like moor frogs and newts .
