Juniper dune Sebbelheide

The Sebbelheide juniper dune is a nature reserve in Haltern am See . It is 2 hectares and named after the nearby settlement of Sebbel. Together with the Westruper Heide , 800 meters to the west, it forms a biotope network.

The area, which was designated as a nature reserve for the first time in 1939, consists of a 200-meter-long strip of dunes isolated within a pine forest. Only remnants and edges of the original heathland are now preserved. In the north the area is overgrown with impenetrable, partially already dying juniper bushes , in the south the area is covered with bushes due to the settlement of the pioneering plant birch , in the west there is a narrow strip of lawn . Almost half of the area is covered by a mixed pine forest with native deciduous tree species .

In 2008 the Sebbelheide was again designated as a protected area. However, one has also to the need for maintenance and development plan (pepl) noted goal is the restoration of a dune ground with juniper and heather surfaces .

Typical plant species are also blackberries , sand birch and sand sedge , silver grass , ostrich grass and sheep fescue , buckthorn , wire goat and small thorn fern.
