The ostrich grasses ( Agrostis ) are a genus of plants within the sweet grass family (Poaceae). The approximately 220 species are distributed almost worldwide in sub- arctic to temperate areas and in mountainous regions of the tropics .
description
Vegetative characteristics
Ostrich grass species are perennial herbaceous plants . These grasses, which are not reed-like, grow clump-forming and they form short subterranean runners and do not become larger than 1 meter. The linear foliage leaves are 5 to 11 mm wide and the youngest leaves appear rolled and not folded when cut open. The often clearly grooved, glabrous, rigid leaves have a hairless leaf sheath and quite long, pointed ligules.
Generative characteristics
The paniculate inflorescences are mostly yellowish or reddish in color, but there are also green colored ones. The lower panicle branches appear to be three or more in the panicle axis, but there are only two basal branches. The spikelets are single-flowered, very fine, not awned, stalked and individually standing, and they appear compressed from the side. The spikelet axis is also glabrous and not hairy. There are no empty husks between the glume and lemma.
Systematics and distribution
The genus Agrostis was established by Carl von Linné in 1753. Synonyms for Agrostis L. nom. cons. are: Vilfa Adans. nom. superflat., Agraulus P.Beauv. , Agrestis Bubani , Anomalotis Steud. , Bromidium Nees & Meyen , Candollea Steud. , Decandolia T. Bastard , Didymochaeta Steud. , Neoschischkinia Tzvelev , Notonema Raf. , Pentatherum Nábelek , Podagrostis (Griseb.) Scribn. & Merr. , Senisetum Honda , Trichodium Michx. , Linkagrostis Romero García .
The approximately 220 species are distributed almost worldwide in sub- arctic to temperate areas and in mountainous regions of the tropics . It is noteworthy that even remote small islands such as the island in the southern Atlantic Ocean Inaccessible Island , which is included in Tristan da Cunha , even has six rare agrostis species.
In Germany, about eleven species occur: reed bent grass or Tender bent grass ( Agrostis agrostiflora ), alpine bent grass ( Agrostis alpina ), Agrostis canina or marsh bent grass ( Agrostis canina ), Red bent grass ( Agrostis capillaris ), Castilian bentgrass ( Agrostis castellana ), giant ostrich grass ( Agrostis gigantea ), rock ostrich grass ( Agrostis rupestris ), rough ostrich grass ( Agrostis scabra ), Schleicher's ostrich grass ( Agrostis schleicheri ), white ostrich grass ( Agrostis stolonifera ), sand ostrich grass ( Agrostis ).
