The nature reserve Leveringhäuser Teich (NSG identification RE-015) is located in the Leveringhausen farming community south of the Dortmund-Ems Canal in the urban area of Waltrop in the Recklinghausen district in North Rhine-Westphalia .
The eponymous lake , also known as the Leveringhauser Vogelteich , was created in 1981 by subsidence . On areas previously used for agriculture, the surface of the land sank below the groundwater level due to mining . Over the years, an extensive area of water with reed beds and siltation zones developed.
The approximately five hectare large Leveringhäuser pond and its surroundings have been designated as a nature reserve of around 10 hectares since 1989. In the first protection ordinance of 1989, the NSG was called the mining area Ickerner Straße , with the second ordinance of 2007 the name was changed to Leveringhäuser Teich . Most of the protected areas are owned by the Ruhr Regional Association .
Over 150 plant species have been mapped in the area. 11 species of dragonflies were found in animals typical of the water . The avifauna of the nature reserve comprises 57 bird species, nine of which are on the North Rhine-Westphalia Red List.
