Ivan Alexandrowitsch Balandin ( Russian Иван Александрович Баландин ; born August 26, 1988 in Novoazowsk , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian - Russian rower .

Career

Balandin began rowing in 2002 and, as a teenager, took part twice in the Junior World Championships for Ukraine. In 2005 he retired with the eighth in the hope run , in 2006 he reached the final in a four-with and finished 5th. After that he competed four times at the U23 World Championships , but was only able to reach the final in a four-with in 2008 win a silver medal.

From 2008 Balandin was used for the Ukrainian national team in the open age group. At the European Championships in Athens he finished 8th in eighth place, the following year at the World Championships in Poznan he finished 7th in the two-man team .

After leaving the U23 junior class due to age, Balandin switched to the Russian national rowing team and was able to compete internationally with this for the first time in 2012. At the European Championships , however, the Russian eighth with Balandin was eliminated in the hope run. At the 2013 World Championships , they already reached the B final, and at the 2014 European Championships in Belgrade Balandin won the silver medal with the Russian eighth behind the Germany eighth . This was followed by further finals at the 2014 and 2015 World Championships as well as a bronze medal at the 2015 European Championships .

In the 2016 Olympic season, Balandin was placed in the four-man without a helmsman who had already qualified for the Olympic Games and finished fourth at the European Championships in Brandenburg . Shortly before the Olympic Games, Balandin was disqualified by the World Rowing Federation as a result of the Russian state doping affair . His name appeared in the so-called McLaren Report , which investigated suspected state doping in Russia and confirmed it on July 18, 2016, in connection with manipulated doping tests. The World Rowing Federation decided to exclude Balandin from the Olympic rowing regatta on July 25, 2016, following the recommendation of the International Olympic Committee for dealing with such cases. The suspension was confirmed by the International Court of Justice for Sports (CAS) in an urgent decision in early August 2016.

At a height of 2.00 m, Iwan Balandin's competition weight is around 92 kg. His younger brother Nikolai Balandin was also an international rower from 2006 to 2013 and switched with Iwan from the Ukrainian to the Russian team. At the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan , both won the gold medal together with the Russian team of eight.
