The EFL Championship 2016/17 was the 13th season of the English EFL Championship and also the 25th season of the top division of the English Football League - after the introduction of the Premier League - as only the second highest English league. The season started on August 5, 2016 and ended on May 7, 2017.

Teams

A total of 24 teams play in the English second division, including 18 from the 2015/16 season . As a newly promoted from the Football League One 2015/16 came Wigan Athletic , Burton Albion and FC Barnsley so. The three relegated teams from the Premier League 2015/16 completed the field: Newcastle United , Aston Villa and Norwich City .
