Conor Hourihane (born February 2, 1991 in Bandon ) is an Irish football player . As a central midfielder, he was trained at Sunderland AFC and then went through all English professional leagues from the fourth division up to the Premier League at Plymouth Argyle , Barnsley FC and Aston Villa .

Career

Plymouth Argyle

Hourihane left his homeland in Ireland at the age of 16 for the youth football department of Sunderland AFC . When he was offered a new contract a year after jumping into the senior division of the "Black Cats" in 2010, he preferred a move to the second division club Ipswich Town instead . There his childhood idol Roy Keane worked as a trainer. The sporting breakthrough was denied to him there, so that at the end of July 2011 he moved two leagues down to Plymouth Argyle free of charge .

In Plymouth, Hourihane made his professional league debut against Shrewsbury Town on the first match day of the 2011/12 season and the first goal followed a good two months later in a 3-2 win over Dagenham & Redbridge . After Darren Purse left , the central player took over the role of team captain during the 2012/13 season and in May 2013 he signed a new two-year contract. His best performances to date followed in the 2013/14 season, in which he played 53 competitive games from the start, scoring nine goals and leading his team from the lower regions of the table up to tenth place. At the end of June 2014, he moved to third division club Barnsley .

Barnsley FC

The transfer fee for Barnsley was £ 250,000 and the contract term was set at three years. After an impressive start and the award for (third division) player of the month August 2014, he was promoted again to team captain in December 2015 during his second season 2015/16. The sporty upswing was preparing the club next to winning the Football League Trophy to promotion to the second division . Hourihane also started successfully with Barnsley in the Football League Championship, winning five of the first seven games, including two 4-0 wins against Rotherham United and Wolverhampton Wanderers, as well as three own goals, which received another award in August 2016 added to player of the month. There was now increasing speculation about an imminent move to a "bigger club" and at the end of January 2017, Barnsley FC confirmed the transfer to second division rivals Aston Villa without mentioning the amount of the transfer fee.

Aston Villa

During the remainder of the 2016/17 season, Hourihane played 17 league games and in the two years that followed, which culminated with promotion to the Premier League after the 2018/19 season, Hourihane played a key role. In summer 2019 he signed a new three-year contract with the "Villans".

National team

After Mourihane had already stood in Irish youth selections, he was initially largely disregarded for the senior team. Relatively late, at the age of 26, he made his first international A match in a 1-0 draw against Iceland. On March 26, 2019, he scored his first goal for Ireland in a 1-0 win over Georgia.
