Frédéric Guilbert (born December 24, 1994 in Valognes ) is a French football player . Mostly used on the right side of defense, he was trained at SM Caen , where he returned via detours in amateur football and the sporting breakthrough at Girondins Bordeaux before he moved to the Premier League at Aston Villa in the summer of 2019 .

Career

Frédéric Guilbert started playing football in his hometown AS Valognes at the age of six . After he turned twelve, he joined the youth department of the nearby professional club SM Caen . There he later came to two first missions in the second team, before he was initially "sorted out" and joined AS Cherbourg in the 2013/14 season in the fifth-class CFA2 of AS Cherbourg , which is also based in Normandy . There he was a regular in the team that took first place and thus attracted the interest of Patrick Battiston - the person in charge at Girondins Bordeaux .

In Bordeaux, Guilbert was initially - as in Caen - initially intended for the reserve eleven in the 2014/15 season, but the following year he made his debut on April 5, 2015 against RC Lens in the top French division. In May 2015 he signed a two-year contract in Bordeaux. As the first choice in the position of right-back he succeeded under then coach Willy Sagnol in the season 2015/16 a positive athletic development that is also reflected in a mission on 13 October 2015 for the 21 team U-French against the Ukraine expressed . However, when Jocelyn Gourvennec, a new coach, came to Bordeaux for the following season in 2016/17 , Guilbert was only a supplementary player and so he was allowed to return to his home club in Caen on loan in October 2016.

In Caen, Guilbert was immediately the undisputed regular on the right side of defense and he helped his team to close relegation in Ligue 1 . In July 2017 Guilbert then moved to Caen with the signing of a new four-year contract. A good year and a half later, he joined Aston Villa in England , and after the transfer on January 31, 2019, a loan back was agreed with Caen until the end of the 2018/19 season. There Guilbert was once again involved in the relegation battle, which was no longer positive and ended in the penultimate final table place .
