Douglas Luiz Soares de Paulo (born May 9, 1998 in Rio de Janeiro ) is a Brazilian footballer who plays as a central midfielder for Aston Villa .
Career
society
Douglas Luiz joined Vasco da Gama in 2013 at the age of 14 and was promoted to the first team in July 2016. He made his debut on August 27, 2016, when he came on as a substitute for Fellype Gabriel in the second half in a 2-2 draw against Tupi FC in the 2016 Campeonato Brasileiro Série B (second division) . He scored his first goal three days later in a 2-1 loss to Vila Nova FC . At the end of the season he was able to celebrate promotion to the top division with Vasco. He then extended his contract until 2019.
Douglas Luiz joined Manchester City on July 15, 2017, signing a five-year deal. It was then awarded directly to FC Girona - a sister club within the City Football Group - for which it made his debut in the Primera Division on August 26, 2017 in a 1-0 home win against FC Málaga . After a season in Spain with 17 competitive appearances, he returned to Manchester. After he was denied a work permit in England, Manchester City loaned him to Girona FC again for the 2018/19 season . This time he came to a total of 29 appearances in all games of the season, but could not prevent the relegation of the Catalans from the top division.
In August 2019, Luiz moved to the first division promoted Aston Villa for a rumored £ 15 million after a work permit had been issued two days earlier.
National team
He represented the U20s of Brazil at the U-20 South American Championship 2017 and the U23s at the 2019 Toulon tournament . In the latter tournament he was the captain of the team.
At the end of October 2019, Douglas Luiz was appointed for the first time by national coach Tite in the A-selection for the friendlies against Argentina and South Korea at the end of November . Douglas Luiz made his first appearance in the game against South Korea. In the 80th minute of the game he was substituted on for Arthur .
