Jota , whose full name is José Ignacio Peleteiro Ramallo (born June 16, 1991 in A Pobra do Caramiñal ), more rarely Jota Peleteiro , is a Spanish football player . The tech-savvy midfielder , who was trained at Celta Vigo , first celebrated his greatest success in his home country at SD Eibar with promotion to the first division, before he also gained greater fame in English football at Brentford FC and in the 2019/20 season in Birmingham signed to Aston Villa in the Premier League .

Career

Celta Vigo

Jota was born in the Galician city of A Pobra do Caramiñal, which is part of the A Coruña province . In the Spanish northwest, his father trained him at the age of seven to twelve years at a small club called Xuventud Aguiño , before he joined the youth department of the nearby club Celta Vigo . In the 2010/11 season he was there regularly for use in the second team and on January 29, 2011 he made his debut for the first substitution against FC Barcelona B in the Segunda División shortly before the end of the game by substitution. There were three more league appearances until June 2011, but in the following season 2011/12 there was no further development in this regard - with the exception of a cup appearance. In the second team he was team captain, but with this he was bottom of the table in the third division Segunda División B. When Celta Vigo went into the 2012/13 season as a first division promoter, Jota was not part of the plans of the then coach Paco Herrera and so they sought a loan deal.

Real Madrid Castilla

Jota himself preferred a permanent move, but in the end they agreed on a loan to Real Madrid Castilla , which had just been promoted to the second division. The transaction included a purchase option of around one million euros for the Madrilenians. However, the year was unfortunate; Jota mostly just sat on the bench and only played three competitive games for Real Madrid's second representative .

SD Eibar

After his return to Celta Vigo, the new coach Luis Enrique also revealed to him that he was not one of his circle of players and so Jota moved for another year to a new club, now to the Basque second division SD Eibar . In Eibar he found his way straight away and after 37 competitive appearances in the 2013/14 season he not only rose to the first division as a second division champion , but was also personally voted into the “Team of the Year”. He contributed the decisive goal to the 1-0 against Deportivo Alavés , which ensured promotion - the first in Eibar's history. Comparisons have been made in the press with David Silva , who resembles Iota stylistically and in his movements.

With this respectable success he played himself in the focus of his home club and Enrique's successor Eduardo Berizzo sought a contract extension, but an agreement remained. After injury breaks in the pre-season and the first games in which he was not part of Celta's team, Jota aimed for a lasting change by leaving Vigo.

Brentford FC

In mid-August 2014 Jota signed a three-year contract in England with Brentford FC , who had just been promoted to the second division. According to Spanish media reports, the transfer fee should have been around 1.5 million euros. A few days after signing the contract, he made his debut as a substitute in the 2-1 away win against Blackpool FC . He scored the first goal for the new club in his seventh competitive game at home against Leeds United on September 27, 2014. Overall, Jota still had some difficulties getting used to the higher intensity in English football, but from the end of November 2014 he put on one Streak of four goals in four games, including a winning goal in added time against London rivals Fulham FC . Between the end of March and the beginning of April 2015, with three goals in four games, he contributed significantly to the fact that the "Bees" reached the playoff games for promotion to the Premier League, in which he and his men were ultimately defeated by Middlesbrough FC .

On the first day of the following season, Jota injured his ankle after a duel with his ex-teammate Jonathan Douglas in the game against Ipswich Town . He underwent surgery ten days later and did not return to gaming until December 5, 2015 against the Milton Keynes Dons . After further short appearances, Jota first agreed with Brentford's sporting management about a contract extension until the end of 2017/18, before he stated that he wanted to leave the club for personal reasons.

Jota returned to Eibar in January 2016 on an 18-month loan. Just eight days after his return, he came on for Eibar in the 5-2 defeat by Athletic Bilbao . He played a total of 20 games in the current season, in which he scored just as little as in the first half of the 2016/17 season, before his regular club in Brentford called him back early in January 2017. With five goals in five games in February 2017, he was in good shape again and Brentford subsequently took advantage of the option to extend his contract for another year.

Birmingham City

At the end of the summer changeover period, Jota joined second division rivals Birmingham City at the end of August 2017 with a four-year contract . The parties have agreed not to disclose the amount of the transfer fee, but Birmingham have confirmed that they have broken the internal record of six million pounds. After an injury on his second mission, Jota's form suffered and, especially after December 2017, he was only used sporadically by coach Steve Cotterill . When a new coach, Gerry Monk , was signed, Jota was always in the starting line-up and some journalists attributed the relegation achieved largely to the greater influence of the Spanish offensive player. In the subsequent 2018/19 season, with the exception of a forced break due to a groin injury, he remained a key player in the “Blues”, although his performances again seemed a bit more inconsistent and only scored three goals.

Aston Villa

In early June 2019, Jota was hired by first division promoted Aston Villa , where he met his ex-coach from Brentford Dean Smith .

Selection teams

On May 20, 2016, he played a friendly against Venezuela for a selection of Galicia . At 1: 1, the opposing goalkeeper Wuilker Faríñez could only let Jota's shot ricochet off, which Iago Aspas then converted with a “stab”.
