Iago Aspas Juncal (born August 1, 1987 in Moaña , Galicia ) is a Spanish football player . The striker is under contract with Celta Vigo in the Spanish Primera División .

Career

In the club

Aspas went through the youth division of Celta Vigo and made his senior debut in the 2007/08 season . In the 2011/12 season, Aspas scored the second-most goals in the Segunda División with 23 goals , winning the Zarra trophy and making a significant contribution to the rise of Celta Vigo to the Spanish first division . Aspas Celta Vigos remained the most successful goalscorer in the top division as well.

For the 2013/14 season Aspas moved to the Premier League for Liverpool FC .

After a disappointing season in which Aspas mostly only acted as a substitute and failed to score in 14 league games, he was loaned to Sevilla FC in July 2014 . Even there, however, he was only used sporadically and could only score two goals in 16 league games. In the Europa League he was able to celebrate the title win with Sevilla.

In June 2015, Sevilla FC acquired the transfer rights to Aspas and transferred him to Celta Vigo. Aspas signed a contract with his youth club that ran until June 30, 2020. In the 2015/16 season , he scored 14 goals in 35 league games. In the course of the 2016/17 season , he extended his working paper to 2022. Aspas scored 19 goals in 32 league games and was fourth-best goalscorer behind Lionel Messi (37), Luis Suárez (29) and Cristiano Ronaldo (25), which earned him the Zarra trophy for the best Spanish goalscorer. Also in the 2017/18 season he was able to confirm his goal quota and score 22 goals in 34 games, making him fourth-best goalscorer behind Messi (34), Cristiano Ronaldo (26) and Suárez (25) and winning the Zarra trophy.

In the national team

Aspas made his debut under Julen Lopetegui on November 15, 2016 in a 2-2 draw against England in the Spanish national team when he came on as a substitute in the second half and scored the next goal in the 89th minute. After scoring five goals in ten international matches, he was nominated for the 2018 World Cup in Russia .
