Björn Engels (born September 15, 1994 in Kaprijke , Flanders ) is a Belgian football player who has been under contract with Aston Villa in the English Premier League since July 2019 .

Career

society

Engels began playing football at the age of six for his hometown club, FC Kaprijke-Bentille. After a year he moved to the youth team at FC Lembeke. In 2003 Engels came to the Sporting Lokeren youth center . After three years of developing as a defender there, the now eleven-year-old joined the youth team of Club Bruges in the summer of 2006 . Between 2006 and 2013 he went through all youth teams up to the U19. In 2013 he received his first professional contract with the club. He made his debut in the Pro League on the 1st matchday of the 2013/14 season in the away game against KV Ostend . In 2015 he won the Belgian Football Cup with Bruges . A year later he secured the championship with the club. In the summer of 2017 he moved to Olympiacos Piraeus . After only one season with 17 appearances, he was awarded to the first division promoted Stade Reims in France in August 2018 . He made his debut for Reims on matchday five in the starting line-up against FC Nantes . He played a total of 33 games in Ligue 1 and the management of Stade Reims were so satisfied that they used a purchase option for a permanent transfer in March 2019. Ultimately, Engels did not stay with the club, as it had also been agreed that in the event of an offer from the English Premier League he would be allowed to move "to the island" - also motivated by the origin of his partner from Liverpool. The contract was awarded the Movers Aston Villa , having been agreed to maintain silence on the amount of the transfer fee (estimated around eight million pounds).

National team

Engels was nominated for the youth national teams from 2011. On April 20, 2011 he played it his first and only time under coach Bob Browaeys for the Belgian U-17 national team . Half a year later he made his first appearance in the U-18 national team under coach Marc van Geersom . On August 8, 2012, Engels made his debut in the Belgian U-19 national team . Overall, he came to five missions for the U19. In 2016 he was in the squad for the Belgian senior team for the first time , but did not appear in the game against Portugal on March 29, 2016. In the autumn of the same year he played for the Belgian U21s . He scored his first goal in his first appearance, the U21 European Championship qualifier against Malta .
