Geography and demography

Bandon is located between two hills on the Bandon River in southern County Cork. Bandon is just under 30 km from Cork City and around 23 km from Cork Airport , both in a south-westerly direction. The place is on the national road N71 from Cork City to Killarney in County Kerry , which - as an alternative to the much shorter N22 - is a popular tourist route through the south-west of Ireland with its partly coastal route. Bus Éireann regularly connects Bandon with Cork City, among others.

Bandon, Market (2006)

The population of Bandons was determined in the 2016 Census to be 6957, which corresponds to an increase of 20% compared to the 2006 census. There is a town twinning with Bandon (Oregon) , which was founded in 1873 by Lord George Bennet and named after his place of birth, the Irish Bandon .

Origins

Bandon celebrated its 400th anniversary in 2004. The place was founded at the beginning of the 17th century as part of the Munster Plantation as an English settlement exclusively for Protestants; Catholics were not allowed to settle in town. The first English settlers came from Somerset . A protective wall about a mile (1.61 km) long surrounded the place. Over time, several bridges were built to connect the districts that had developed on both banks of the river, and the place became known as Bandon Bridge, or Droichead na Bandan in Irish .

Finbarr , the patron saint of the city and diocese of Cork, was probably born around 550 near Bandon.
