Peter Persidis (born March 8, 1947 in Vienna ; † January 21, 2009 there ) was an Austrian football player and assistant coach to Josef Hickersberger at the 2008 European Football Championship .
Life
Persidis played in the position of Libero for First Vienna FC 1894 and for Olympiacos Piraeus . With Piraeus he celebrated the championship three times in a row (1973-1975) and two cup wins . In his last position as a professional at Rapid Vienna , he won the ÖFB Cup in 1976 , was team captain from 1978 to 1980 and completed his career in 1982 with the championship. Persidis was appointed to the Austrian national soccer team seven times , his first appearance took place in November 1976 against Greece . He was also in the squad for the Football World Cup in Argentina in 1978 , but was not used.
Following his active career, he coached the Rapid Vienna U21 team. Then he initially retired from the football business. It was not until 1998 that he returned to work at Rapid Vienna. He worked as a coaching assistant until 2001 and after coach Ernst Dokupil's dismissal in 2001 he took over as an interim coach for two games. From summer 2002 he was assistant to Josef Hickersberger. When he took over the Austrian national team in 2006, Persidis also became his assistant coach there. In the game of the European Championship Austria - Germany in 2008 he sat on the bench as head coach for 50 minutes after Josef Hickersberger was banished to the stands. After Hickersberger's resignation in 2008, Persidis took over the U-19 national team, but he had to quit this job in October 2008 due to illness.
Persidis died in January 2009 at the age of 61 as a result of cancer. He was buried at the Neustift cemetery in Vienna.
In 2011 the Persidisweg in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.
